Class Experience
This flex class is 9 weeks long and will give an overview of musical terminology, different instruments, different musical eras, and famous composers from those eras. This is an excellent course to use as an introduction to music for young learners! The course schedule is as follows: Week 1: Musical Beat Week 2: Tempo Week 3: Dynamics Week 4: Wind Instruments Week 5: String Instruments Week 6: Percussion Instruments Week 7: Baroque Music and Composers Week 8: Classical Music and Composers Week 9: Romantic Music and Composers I will provide a video lecture outlining the weekly topic no later than Monday at 5pm. A YouTube playlist will also be posted in the classroom for additional listening activities. A handout will be provided which summarizes the content of the video lecture and contains critical thinking activities. Learners should complete these activities after watching the video lectures and listening to the additional materials provided and post their responses to the classroom no later than Friday at 5pm. I will check into the classroom on Wednesday and offer a Q&A session for any learners who need additional help or have extra questions. I encourage students to interact with each other and myself and will help facilitate classroom discussions relevant to the course. These additional (and optional!) conversation posts will be posted throughout the week. No musical knowledge is necessary to enjoy this class! Learners only need an excitement for music and the desire to learn more. Following this class, learners will feel comfortable defining basic musical terminology. They will be able to identify different terminology in music when listening, such as "tempo" and "dynamics". They will have an idea of different instruments in the orchestra and be able to identify them upon hearing them. They will also have a broad understanding of different musical periods and know the names of famous composers from each era. This is a flexible schedule course, which means there are NO LIVE CLASSES. I will post materials on a weekly schedule and learners will be responsible for watching lecture videos, listening to music playlists, and posting to the classroom as they take the class. I encourage my students to get to know each other through the online classroom and welcome any questions and comments about the material at any time!
