Recent research shows that one thing kids are missing with online learning is the chance to be around other kids and solve problems without adult intervention. They are missing the chance to learn social skills on the playground or at the park. With all classes supervised and controlled by the teacher, students aren't learning how to interact and be social in unique situations that will face them for the rest of their lives. This class hopes to address that issue. In class students will talk with as little adult intervention as possible. If they are stuck for topics, the teacher may make suggestions to get things started. Typically once one person picks a topic things flow naturally from there. The teacher will observe and only intervene when necessary. As a bonus, students earn points for positive social behaviors. At the end of the calendar month, the student with the most points earns a $5 Outschool gift card! (The code for the gift card will be sent in a private message to the parent registering the student.) Points are given out according to the following list: 1. Join on time - 1 point 2. Introduce yourself - 2 points 3. Start a new topic - 2 points 4. Comment on a topic - 1 point 5. Use responses that prove you are listening - 1 point 6. Ask a question - 2 points 7. Reach out and include those who aren't speaking much - 4 points 8. Treat others with respect - 4 points 9. Show kindness - 4 points A topic to start each week will be posted to the classroom at least 2 days before the scheduled meeting. Week 1 (Feb 1): Do you have pets? Week 2 (Feb 8): What do you like to do on the weekend? Week 3 (Feb 15): Where have you traveled? Week 4 (Feb 22): What do you want to be when you grow up? Other upcoming topics include: What is the weather like? What hobbies do you enjoy? What foods do you like or hate? What is your favorite animal? What is your favorite thing about school? What is your favorite movie? What sports do you enjoy playing or watching? Do you have any brothers, sisters, or cousins?

Teacher expertise and credentials
Texas Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
I have experience with all ages. I have worked as a preschool teacher and preschool director. I have taught all subjects in a public elementary school. I have taught all middle school subjects in a private school. I also have experience teaching gifted and talented students as well as special education students through high school. At the high school level I have taught mostly math and science, but a few other subjects as well (logic, consumer finance, study skills, etc). I believe all students should be taught to learn starting from what they currently know. Whether it is a 10 year old just learning to sound out words or a 6 year old earning his first high school credit. I have experience with both!
I have my Master's Degree in Education. I am a mother of twin middle school students (both are twice exceptional) and a large dog. I enjoy going for walks, reading, solving logic puzzles, and completing escape rooms.
