*The prerequisite for this course is Elementary Arabic: Level 1 (Levantine Dialect)* With over 400 million speakers worldwide, Arabic is the fifth most spoken language in the world and an official language in 22 countries. It’s a Semitic language (that means it’s related to Hebrew) with a nearly 2,000-year-old history that includes a rich tradition of poetry and calligraphy. Learning Arabic can also unlock many doors for you in the job market: the economies of the Middle East and North Africa are growing rapidly and there will likely continue to be a huge demand for this language in the future. In this short course, we’ll continue on our journey of studying the rich and exquisite Arabic language! Students will build on their knowledge of basic words and phrases to have longer conversations in Arabic. We’ll also learn a few more tricky, but fun sounds that don’t exist in English and add another 6 letters of the alphabet to our repertoire! Homework will be in the form of short Kahoot quizzes to review what we learned in class. This class meets once a week over four weeks, for a total of four classes: Class 1: expand on basic conversational phrases + review of alphabet: a, ī/y, ū/w, b, t, th, j, ḥ, kh Class 2: expressing likes and desires + alphabet: d, dh Class 3: more cultural greetings and well wishes + alphabet: r, z Class 4: review of conversation skills + alphabet: s, sh I like to keep things as interactive as possible by showing visuals, drawing on the screen, and eliciting answers from learners. If your student is a bit shy and prefers not to be called on, that’s no problem - just let me know in advance. Also, please bring a pencil and some paper to class :)

Hi everyone, I’m Mr. Hassan. It’s nice to (virtually) meet you!
I love all things language and culture. 🚀 🌎
I'm a Language Arts teacher with 7+ years of teaching experience. I've taught at two international colleges, a study abroad middle/high school, and online via Zoom, helping students from around the world become critical thinkers and great communicators. Here are some of the courses I’ve designed and led: The Art of Public Speaking, The Psychology of Human Interactions, Intercultural Communication, and Religion and Culture.
Do you know what a "polyglot" is? It's someone who knows several languages. In addition to English, I can speak Arabic, Spanish, Russian, and Urdu-Hindi. I particularly love learning about etymology, the study of the interconnected origins of words! For example, did you know the words "manually" and "manicure" are related since they both come from the Latin root "man" meaning “hand"? Pretty cool, huh?
In terms of my education, I have a BA in International Relations from Boston University, an MA in Religion from the University of Chicago, and a Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA).
I believe in putting students like you in the driver’s seat of their own educational journey. I ask a lot of questions in class to get learners to explore and discover new things on their own.
I look forward to seeing you in our classroom soon!
