Electricity - Measuring with a Voltmeter (Hands On)
Class experience
This is a "Hands On" science class that continues the "What is Electricity" series. In this class the students will use their own voltmeter to learn how to measure electricity. The class is split into three sessions, each focusing on a major aspect of measuring electricity. Session 1: Measuring Voltage Explore the basics of a voltmeter Explain the three main aspects of electricity: Volts, Amps, Ohms Practice measuring battery to see how much life is left in them Explore voltage...
Electricity has been a big party of my life. As a teenager I was building computer circuits, robots, and discrete electric devices. I worked after school in my Dad's radio shack store repairing everything from radios to toasters to TV's. Through the decades I held on and developed this understanding through hands on experience as well as formal courses. Perhaps more importantly I have a skill for explaining complex concepts in a simple easy to understand manner and a passion for plain true practical understanding to the next generation. Learning should be deep and fun!
We have partnered with Perfect Package, to provide a full package with all the necessary materials for this class. They stock all items and ship on time. It is highly recommended to purchase the package. Here is the link: http://www.perfectpackageonline.com/product/electricity-measuring-with-a-voltmeter-hands-on-package/2?cp=true&sa=true&sbp=false&q=false Additional Materials required for session experiments: (not included in the kit above) Session 1: A collection of batteries, preferably some old and some new Session 2: A cup of clean water Some table salt Session 3: A piece of thick paper No 2. pencil (might need a sharpener) All other items are provided by Perfect Package, see link above
Parents: The experiments in this set of classes are fairly easy for young children, however, please gauge whether it is appropriate for an adult to be present in case the child has difficulty. Sometimes in the group setting, an individual child can feel overwhelmed with simple problems and miss out on a successful experience. I leave it to you as parent to gauge the child's capability to complete the experiments successfully.
Learning facts and skills is definitely important, but an often missed but critical piece of education is understanding the foundation. Without a proper understanding of the underlying principles of "how something works," the collection of facts...
