Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 5
This class meets for year round reading tutoring depending on what you would like to sign up for! It can be ongoing throughout the whole year, or just for a few months. I strongly value parent and teacher relationships. You know your child best, and I greatly appreciate your input. I like to keep tutoring sessions fun and engaging while creating an atmosphere where all students can feel successful in reading.

If you do not see a time in my schedule that fits your needs, please do not hesitate to reach out. I can always try to arrange a time for reading tutoring if it is after school!

In this class, your child will receive one on one tailored reading tutoring depending on their specific needs and deeply rooted in current research of the science of reading. For the first one on one tutoring class, we will get to know one another and I will assess their learning and understanding of literacy skills. We will keep in contact about your child's specific needs. You know your child best! I want to work as partners to help your child deepen their reading abilities. Most students who struggle with reading, need direct instruction in phonics. I am a phonics based reading tutor using research based strategies. The Science of Reading research shapes much of my reading instruction and always has (before it became a buzz word :) )!

Main Focus Skills:
Letter Recognition
Blending letter sounds
Phonics: blends, digraphs etc.
Fluency
High Frequency Sight Words
Comprehension - questions within the text and above the text
Reading grade level phonics passages
Reading grade level, high interest books

Depending on your child's needs, topics taught during our tutoring session will be reviewing sight words and phonics skills through learning games and activities. We will work on reading fluency and reading comprehension based on grade level standards. If your child needs to practice phonics skills, we will work on reading passages that highlight those skills. If they need to work on comprehending a text, we will work on main idea and key details, author's purpose, understanding a character's actions, thoughts and feelings etc. Fluency and reading comprehension go hand in hand in developing a strong reader! As I assess your child I will be listening for word recognition, decoding skills and understanding of the text.

An example of the topics taught in this one on one tutoring class would be: Begin by reviewing sight words and phonics patterns. Practice reading a passage together and work on decoding words. Review together the words your child needs extra practice with. I will then ask some comprehension questions and your child will answer aloud or write some of the answers down. I like to include a variety of games, movement activities and more to keep students engaged and excited about class!

In each tutoring session, I will model the lesson based off of how your child learns best. I try to teach to a variety of learning styles to keep students engaged and excited about learning. I will use slides, discussion questions, printable reading passages, games, movement activities, flashcards and more to practice reading skills. Any materials the student will need access to will be on the screen, so you do not have to print or prepare anything. I love making learning fun and engaging! I want your child to develop a love for reading and be excited and confident in their reading abilities!
