Description

Class Experience

This curriculum is designed to help students with disabilities build the background knowledge and vocabulary critical to listening and reading comprehension.  It integrates reading, writing, speaking, listening, and the study of vocabulary and grammar in a way that engages today's learners and supports them in building a broad and diverse set of literacy skills. Students will work across ELA standards indicated for kindergarten/first grade (see http://www.corestandards.org/ for more information). 

Students will be met where they are. I aim for progress and application rather than perfection.

I am a former Special Education teacher, specializing in literacy. I have previously created courses for students with moderate to severe disabilities in middle school. 

I have written permission to use this curriculum that was created for autistic students.

In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:Nearpod

1 hour 30 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.

I will be using carefully curated videos and resources within Nearpod. I will use Nearpod in the teacher-directed mode. Students may choose to create a free Nearpod account and have two windows open to participate in student activities. Or, students can watch through my shared screen and participate through annotation. Nearpod is an approved third-party educational tool. It is rated as excellent through Common Sense Education.
