ELA Skills Practice-Reading, Spelling, Vocabulary, Grammar - Ongoing; Ages 6-7
What's included
1 live meeting
25 mins in-class hours per weekClass Experience
Your child will spend 25 minutes each week practicing reading, spelling, and grammar skills and adding a new vocabulary word to their written and spoken vocabulary. Breakdown of each 25-minute live class session: Reading practice: During each class meeting, students will be presented with single syllable and multi-syllable words to decode. Students will use Zoom's annotate feature (or a whiteboard and marker) to mark where syllables are and where there are instances of multiple letters representing one sound. The goal of this activity is for students to become masters of breaking longer words down into smaller, more manageable parts. This word attack process is modeled at the beginning of every class period so that students know what is expected of them. Vocabulary and Spelling: During this part of our weekly meeting, a new vocabulary word will be introduced and students will discuss how they could use it in their written and spoken language. Students will learn how to spell it by using phonemic awareness. The optional homework activity is to write a creative sentence using the word of the week and post it to the classroom to share with the class. Grammar and usage practice: Students will use the annotate feature to proofread sentences with spelling, grammar, and usage errors. Students may opt to make the corrections on their own paper or whiteboard, then check their work as screen annotation is occurring. Optional homework activity: Students may post their own sentences in the classroom with grammar, spelling, and usage errors as a challenge for other students to correct. Due to the fact that a different vocabulary word and a different set of multi-syllable word attack words will be used each week, every class meeting will cover new content but in the same predictable format. ****PLEASE NOTE: The use of Zoom's annotate feature is HIGHLY recommended for this class! Learners who are not familiar with using the annotate feature are strongly advised to practice using it before class starts. The annotate feature is currently not available on Chromebooks. This class is more fun and interactive when the annotate feature is used so if a device other than a Chromebook is available, that would be the best choice for participating in class. Sample of vocabulary words and word attack words to be used: Week 1: Vocabulary word-alarm. Word attack practice words: goat, slow, toast, shadow, upload, growing Week 2: Vocabulary word-enormous. The recording of each class will be available for review.

I am a certified elementary teacher and certified reading therapist. I am offering this class to give students an in-depth study of how our English words are structured, and how to break them down into their sounds in order to make decoding easier. I teach each lesson using the Phono-graphix method which I have been formally trained in by the program authors. I have been using this strategy with my private students for over 20 years and my students have had amazing success with it.
