Description

Class Experience

Students will add one vocabulary word to their spoken and written vocabulary each week. Students will practice, and within 4-6 weeks of attending classes, will become masters at decoding new words. Students will practice proofreading text daily to become proficient in editing their creative work.
I am a certified elementary teacher and certified reading therapist. I am offering this class to give students an in-depth study of how our English words are structured, and how to break them down into their sounds in order to make decoding easier. I teach each lesson using the Phono-graphix method which I have been formally trained in by the program authors. I have been using this strategy with my private students for over 20 years and my students have had amazing success with it.
Students are encouraged to complete the optional homework assignment each week for vocabulary and grammar and usage practice. The vocabulary assignment is to write a creative sentence using the word of the day. The grammar and usage homework assignment is to post a sentence or two in the classroom with errors for others to correct, and to participate in the classroom by submitting corrections to other student's sentence submissions.
The only supplies needed are paper and pencil or a whiteboard and marker. I encourage students to keep a journal or collection of their weekly words so they can review them at a later time and challenge themselves to use their new vocabulary words more often.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Students will receive informal feedback from the teacher during class. The teacher will give feedback on students' homework posted to the classroom.
25 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
We will be using teacher-created materials for this class.
