The "I Can Fly" Reading Program provides lessons in phonics for children who are just beginning to learn to read. The methods used in this program are based on the Orton-Gillingham approach, in that, every sound and spelling rule is taught in a structured, cumulative manner with repetition. Perfect for all young students, especially those who have learning delays, speech and language difficulties, APD, autism, and those with a family history of dyslexia and may be dyslexic. Each week, we will cover one chapter in the workbook. The first class of the week will provide the introduction to the topic through games and guided practice. I use the "I can - we can - you can" approach to learning. Learners will be given homework to practice from the lesson. The second class of the week will review the concepts in the chapter and offer additional games and activities that can be completed at home. Parent involvement outside of class is important to help cement the concepts taught in class. We will continue our work started in Part A. Session 17: 'ow' as long /o/ Session 18: 'ay' as long /a/ Session 19: 'ar', 'er', 'ir', 'or', 'ur' Session 20: 'oy' & 'oi' Session 21: long vowel teams Session 22: The letter 'y' Session 23: Words ending with 'ie' Session 24: The 'ew' sound Session 25: Long /o/ and long /i/ words Session 26: The /qu/ sound Session 27: /au/, /aw/ & /alk/ Session 28: The /ct/ sound Session 29: /ea/ as Short /e/ Session 30: Protecting Short Vowels and Past Tense Words This class is appropriate for students just learning to read as well as those who are struggling with reading. Class sizes will be kept small to ensure maximum participation by students. Students will be required to have their video on. Students will be encouraged to speak as it is an important part of learning the sounds. They also need to know how to annotate on the screen to participate fully in the games. Class videos may be reviewed for additional practice or if a student misses a class.
