US Grade 6 - 8
This class is designed to help students focus their attention on responding to questions with well-written responses. Academic classes require students to respond to questions with complete thoughts and with evidence based answers. In this class, we will read short texts and practice answering questions by restating the question and including the necessary information to make the response well-rounded. Each class will have different reading material to work with. Class structure: 1. Whole group activity: - reading of the short text - discussion - analysis of the question - looking for details - practice structuring a response 2. Independent practice with a second text - group discussion - constructive criticism for improvements *** Please know that this exact class is also being offered by Natalie Sydor at times that are different than the ones that I am able to offer. Please check her schedule in case any of my class times do not fit in with your schedule. Thank you!*** Please note that I do not share video recordings of the lessons.
Learning Goals

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Adrian Sydor.
I'm very interested in nature, writing, and exploration. I've worked in the field of environmental education for multiple years at Forest Preserves and a National Park. This has included teaching school groups about wildlife, ecosystems, and ecology. I volunteer with habitat restoration at forest preserves which includes cutting down and removing invasive species, harvesting seeds, and monitoring wildlife. Attendance at professional development meetings has inspired me to teach young learners. My goal is to share my knowledge about the natural world around us and to equip young learners with a strong knowledge about plants, animals, and ecosystems. Furthermore, I strive to help students create a strong base of knowledge so that they can learn lifelong study skills and be able to continue learning about their environmental interests by themselves.
I have also found writing to be an extremely useful tool when it comes to expressing our thoughts, describing what we observe in nature, and by exploring new concepts. I love to hike and spend a lot of time in nature and journal in my notebook. I believe that writing and science go hand in hand. Therefore, writing skills can, and definitely should, be developed while exploring nature.
I am currently offering science related, environmentally focused classes, as well as writing lessons. I'm excited to have the opportunity to work on the Outschool platform and hope to work with your learner in the very near future.
