**Parents, I'm here to work with you. Don't see any available sections or times that match your needs? Please reach out to me via Outschool message! I do my best to accommodate schedule requests! Please note that a session must be scheduled/confirmed with me at least five (5) business days prior to the desired start date. This ensures I have time to customize the lesson for your learner!** This class has been set up as an initial English Language Arts tutoring session for whichever ELA topic the learner needs. We can focus on grammar and punctuation instruction, essay composition, essay editing, creative writing (any step of the process, from brainstorming to editing), reading comprehension through nonfiction or literature, PSAT Reading Test prep, vocabulary study, public speaking skills, listening skills, and more. You name it, and I’m happy to work with you to help your learner with the ELA skill they need to focus on most. This class is tailored to YOU! Additional sessions can be scheduled if this one-time class is a good fit for you. If you are interested in reading comprehension or analysis practice through literature, here are some titles I have extensive experience reading and/or teaching: -To Kill a Mockingbird -Life of Pi -The Odyssey -The Great Gatsby -The Scarlet Letter -Romeo and Juliet -Macbeth -Night -Lord of the Flies -Fahrenheit 451 -Shakespeare’s sonnets -The Most Dangerous Game (short story) -The Necklace (short story) -A Sound of Thunder (short story) Please note: Mrs. Grysko may compile content for ongoing, nonfiction reading comprehension lessons or ongoing, text-based writing lessons with the assistance of educator-friendly AI. Mrs. Grysko reviews each text and its sources to ensure accurate and reliable information that will assist your learner. Furthermore, Mrs. Grysko personally creates ELA questions and prompts to ensure rigorous, high-quality practice material for her learners! Mrs. Grysko's Teaching Style: I use the instructional model of “I Do, We Do, You Do.” *I first teach terms, definitions, and skills directly, all while showing exemplars and demonstrating how to apply the new knowledge (hence, “I Do” the teaching). *Next, in the “We Do” stage, I guide students in practicing the key skills by helping them look at a text/piece of writing closely. I provide immediate, in-class feedback, such as clarifying misunderstanding and assisting with correct application of skills. *Finally, it’s the “You Do” stage: Students show off what they’ve learned by trying out the techniques on their own. Of course, I’ll be there to help, but this part of the process is the key to retention and ownership of the learning. Mrs. Grysko’s Class Participation Expectations: *During class, I'll ask learners to respond to various questions and quick check-ins. This helps me 1) assess each student’s progress and 2) offer immediate help if needed. Learners may choose to respond by speaking, typing in the chat, and/or using the “reactions” feature on Zoom. *Zoom's video feature is very helpful for me to monitor your child’s learning and understanding. I encourage all students to keep their Zoom video on during the duration of class. Learners may, however, choose to turn their video off after an initial video check-in if they prefer. Active participation verbally and/or in the chat is required so that I know the student is working and understanding the content. *I have so much planned for your child’s learning! Any class activities we do not get to during the live class will be assigned for homework. In most circumstances, the homework is optional (but recommended), and, unless otherwise stated, the homework should take no more than 10-15 minutes. FOR ANY WRITING HOMEWORK: I will assign the homework via Outschool student message and/or parent message. Learners should reply to the message with their homework responses, and I will give feedback within 24 hours. I highly recommend that students complete any assigned homework to get the most out of the class! Safety & Communication Prior to/During Tutoring Sessions: *When communicating with teachers on Outschool, please remember to keep all learner information private. It is appropriate to share learner first name, learner grade level, and learner age. *Parents, be sure to never share or send: -student report cards or test data documents that reveal student last name, student/school ID number, school name, location, etc. -photos of student work that includes student last names, school names, student ID number, etc. *Additionally, be sure your learner has their Zoom name set to show FIRST NAME only. *To help Mrs. Grysko prepare for a tutoring session with your learner, please ensure you do NOT send photos or PDFs with any private information as listed above. You are encouraged to summarize the data in your own words. For instance, “her last report shows she answered 10 out of 25 questions correct for the Central Idea standard” or “he scored a Level 2 out of 5 on his last standardized reading assessment for the state.”
Learning Goals
Students will strengthen their ELA skills through practice, discussion with the teacher, and revision of writing and/or literary understanding.
Students will demonstrate mastery through oral or written informal assessment (individualized for the learner) as created by the teacher.
