So, you've just written an amazing story; you're done, right? NO! Are things like spelling mistakes, repetition, and a lack of clarity that big of a deal? YES! In this course students will learn how to edit and proofread their writing and why it is crucial to present their work in an organized, understandable, and grammatically accurate manner. They will be given the tools to become proficient at rereading fiction for technique and content.

In our first class, we will define editing and discuss its significance in creative writing. Slides listing the steps to editing a story along with examples will support the lecture. To learn about repetitiveness, we will play “The Repetition Game” where learners will guess words that are being repeated in a paragraph. The first to shout out the correct word wins! We will also learn about word choice by replacing boring and common adjectives with fresh and distinctive adjectives that make our sentences come to life.

In our second class, proofreading is introduced. We will talk about why it matters and list the steps for this application. Students will be guided in an interactive discussion on the tools that can help us proofread our writing. To practice grammar, students will play “Grammar Trivia”, where they will write down the answers to questions (verbal and displayed on screen), and the student with the highest number of correct answers will be the winner!

In our final class, we will review what we have learned about editing and proofreading by discussing and describing these applications. Time will be available for questions and comments. To show what they have learned, students will play “Wrap it Up!” where they will answer questions as fast as they can about editing and proofreading.

As this is an inclusive space, all students are welcome. If your student has special abilities or requires accommodations, please let me know.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Master's Degree from University of South Carolina
I have extensive experience working with children, adolescents, and young adults within the educational and mental health systems. While in graduate school, I was a part-time college instructor which ignited my passion for teaching. I then became a mental health therapist, working in residential facilities as well as in the community. For the past six years, I have taught students online, which has been rewarding and challenging in ways that continue to inspire me.

Along with being a teacher, I am also a writer. I have had two short stories published, and I continue to regularly submit material. For three years, I had a blog that included my short stories, reviews, and opinions on various issues. Other examples of my writing experience consist of curriculums for an independent living program, program descriptions, numerous website articles, as well as online advertisements. I enjoy sharing my passion for writing with students and hearing about what inspires them. I strive to provide a supportive atmosphere for my students, allowing them to harness and express their creativity in ways unique to them.

Throughout my educational and professional careers, I have implemented various tools in my own life to create and maintain a system of learning, organization, and balance. After successes and failures alike, I now believe the knowledge of "how to learn" is a skill that serves us well after we graduate from school. I enjoy sharing these valuable skills with students who may discover a new way to be productive, feel confident as they plan for their future, and apply them to different parts of their lives for the rest of their lives.
