Why does everyone look so different, even in our own family? Why do you have different colored eyes or hair than your mom or your sister? Shouldn’t we have the same genetic traits? Why can some people can roll their tongue or write with a different hand than you? You can thank DNA for that! But what is DNA? Let’s find out with some fun videos, pictures, and most importantly, with food! We will discover more about observable genetic traits, explore the building blocks of life, all while celebrating our similarities and differences, and create a double helix for dessert. So grab some Twizzlers, toothpicks & some chewy candies and let’s make a delicious DNA strand!
Learning Goals
Learners will understand the general concept of DNA and how it effects genetic traits. They will also gain an appreciation for the vast differences among people.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have been teaching through play since 2005 when I started an in-home preschool. It was then that I realized I was born to teach. While home with my 4 small children, I earned my Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education. Since I became a NH Certified Teacher in 2014, I have taught 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade in public & charter school settings. I also coach soccer, have been a Girl Scout leader for 10 years, and operate After-school & Summer Enrichment programs. Joining Outschool is an exciting addition to my teaching opportunities and will allow me to reach more learners!
Some of my primary goals as a teacher are to instill the love of learning, the belief that learning is possible for all, and that challenges lead to progress. My favorite parts of teaching are hearing my learners laugh, embracing their growing personalities and learning styles, encouraging them to wonder and ask questions, overcoming challenges, and above all, sharing in their joy when they are successful.
