Class Experience

Students will learn new vocabulary, identify literary devices, understand how Poe's life influence his writing, learn how to read and interpret Poe's work, and write literary responses.
I have over twenty years of experience teaching rhetoric writing, reading, language arts, and critical thinking skills. I am familiar with the material, and have the experience to foster meaningful learning. I have taught English and Language Arts for many years at the high school level. My experience includes teaching history as well as social studies, as these topics often go hand in hand with literature, writing, and humanities. I have a degree in English Teaching, and I enjoy teaching students how to explore historical events through written material. As an English teacher, I have taught students to read and critically analyze differentiating opinions about fictional works and non-fictional topics and arrive at a substantiated belief. In addition, I have taught in a team taught, multidisciplinary Language Arts/History class at the secondary school level.
Any reading that we do not finish during class will be provided to the student for reading outside of class. There will be no more than one hour of reading per week required outside of class time, and I will provide handouts of the material.
I will provide materials.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
I will provide quizzes during class, and student feedback will be given individually. I will give them feedback on their written responses and discussions in class. I will assign them a progress grade upon request.
1 hour 50 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
Edgar Allan Poe's works portray graphic and sensitive topics such as death and murder. He struggled with substance abuse and depression. Those topics will be discussed with a high degree of sensitivity with respect to the writer, as well as the individuals taking the course. I will facilitate productive and diplomatic discussion regarding these topics.
