Ecosystems and Apex Predators: They Need Each Other!

Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
This one-time science class is an introduction to the most ferocious predators on planet Earth. In this class, we will talk about what makes a predator "apex". We will learn about the four trophic levels of the food chain and where apex predators fits in. We will discuss how trophic cascade can occur if the apex predator is removed from an ecosystem and we will explore a real-life example. Students will also find out if humans belong on the food chain and if apex predators see us as prey.
If time allows, we will play a fun trivia game at the end of class to see what students can remember.
An optional printable mini-book will be available from the lesson.
Learning Goals
Students will learn what makes a predator apex and that they keep their ecosystems healthy and balanced. Students will learn about trophic levels and that trophic cascades can be caused by the removal or return of an apex predator.

Hello! Thank you for stopping by! I love students of all ages and I love teaching a variety of topics. Some of my favorite classes to teach are reading, nature, and science. I try to create a positive and encouraging atmosphere so learners feel comfortable in participating. I want students to have fun while learning!

I have a Bachelor of Arts degree from Minnesota State University, a Minnesota teaching license, and a 160 hour TEFL certification.

I have been teaching and guiding children since 2000 as a preschool/childcare provider, an ELA teacher in public school classrooms, and an ESL teacher in online classrooms.

I love teaching, but I also love being a student! I take as many classes as possible on whatever subject piques my interest. Teaching and learning are my life!

When my three daughters are home from college we love going for hikes, cooking together, and of course, snuggling our two funny cats, Pumpkin and Marigold.

I hope to see your learner in class!
