In the 6 week course for middle grades students, Ecology: Ecosystem Dynamics, we will focus on ecosystems and interdependence, using both in-class activities and projects to complete outside of class.
Class experience
US Grade 6 - 7
Ecology: Ecosystem Dynamics focuses on ecology concepts, terrestrial wildlife, habitats and ecosystems, responsible human actions, wildlife issues and trends, and wildlife conservation. This is a cooperative, project-based class, with both in-class activities and projects to complete outside of class. Students in this class will obtain a deeper understanding of the natural world. Students will develop awareness, knowledge, skills, and commitment resulting in informed decisions, responsible behavior, and constructive actions concerning wildlife and the environment. Students will also gain confidence and speaking skills while sharing projects with peers in a low-pressure setting.
Alison Blanco is an environmental scientist living in Southwest Florida and has worked on projects involving the Florida panther, fire in Florida's ecosystems, and other conservation biology issues. She has a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology from the University of Florida and a Master of Science degree in Environmental Science from Florida Gulf Coast University. Alison has taught biological and physical science to middle, high school, and college students in both public school and the private sector for over 20 years.
Homework Offered
This is a project based class, so students should be prepared to work for 1-2 hours each week on their projects. Some activities are open-ended projects, in which they design and create a project based on a specific ecology topic. Others are outside activities involving observation or measurement. Some parental assistance may be needed.1 - 2 hours per week outside of class

This is a project-based class, so there are some supplies needed to complete the projects. Most of these supplies are common household items. - nature journal (a notebook with unlined paper or a small sketchbook - any size is fine) - owl pellet (can purchase through Acorn Naturalist or any other source. Cost is under $5) - bird seed mix that contains sunflower seeds. - tweezers - toothpicks - magnifying glass - 1 quart jar OR 2 liter soda bottle - soil (either from outside, or purchased soil without fertilizer) - dry beans - computer paper - washable markers - aluminum tray - measuring tape - scissors, glue sticks - pocket microscope (optional) - clipboard (optional) - binoculars (optional) There are also a few open-ended projects that may require some craft supplies, such as cardboard, felt, construction paper, paint, etc., depending on how your student chooses to approach the project.

Some labs will require parental guidance and assistance such as owl pellet dissection or other activities. Google Docs, Google Jamboard, Google Drive, & Google Sheets will be used as supplemental tools in and out of live class times. Students will need to use a Google account to work with Google software. These accounts are free, but may need to be monitored by the parent. I post educational videos on YouTube that pertain to the topic of study. All videos have been vetted and are from reputable sources, but parents may need to monitor the use of this website.
Many activities in this class originated from Project WILD, an interdisciplinary conservation and environmental education program that focuses on wildlife and habitat. Alison Blanco is a trained Project WILD instructor.
