How can we use our creative eye to turn everyday objects and found things into unique art?

Class Experience

Students will harness and explore their creativity through eco-friendly art projects. The emphasis will be on the artistic process and inventiveness; no art experience is required. Each session will involve instruction, creation time, and discussion. Students will learn how they can make unique, fun, and interesting art using recyclable and natural materials. The only required homework is gathering materials. Students will be judged on effort and class engagement.

Guiding questions:

How do we put our own, unique touch on a project?

How do we "get in the zone" while creating art?

What are the makings of an interesting piece of art?

What are the basic elements of art and design?

Class Projects:

1. Printing With Homemade Paint - Using coffee, tea, spices, and berries, we'll first mix our own paint. Then we'll cut stamps out of potatoes, celery, and apples, and use these to create prints.

2. Handmade Recycled Cardboard Journals - We'll make our own journals with a simple sewing binding technique. We'll paint our journal covers using paintbrushes and homemade paint.

3. Mobile Mania - We'll make different hanging mobiles with cool compositions using string, sticks, and leaves.

4. Weaving Wonders - We'll weave with nature using foraged sticks, string, and other found natural materials.

5. Mandalas and Impermanent Art - We'll create mandalas using leaves, flower, petals, and rocks. We'll explore the idea and purpose of impermanent art.

Teacher expertise and credentials
It's so important for young people to hear that they don't have to be perfect at drawing or painting to create authentic and expressive art. Art is about exercising creative choices in any medium. All of these projects could be made by a professional artist or a curious child. I am an abstract artist, and I often create using elements of these projects.
