In this ongoing class students will learn Spanish organically through exposure to easy to follow conversations. At the start of each class we begin by watching a short video of 2 Native Spanish speakers from Mexico talk about the subject for the week. They speak slowly to ensure that the language learners understand the words. During the first class of the week, after watching the video we talk about what the video is about. Students will learn to speak Spanish organically, having a better chance of actually holding a real conversation in Spanish instead of learning a list of words, yet not knowing how to properly place them in a sentence.
I am bilingual in English and Spanish. I started learning Spanish in High School, taking 2 years of Spanish classes in High School and 1 year of Spanish classes at DePaul University. Those classes helped me to build a great foundation in reading fluently in Spanish and speaking the language. For the past 20 years, I have immersed myself in the Spanish language and culture. Most native Spanish speakers are amazed when they hear me read and speak Spanish because they say I do so without an English accent. I love to teach others how to read Spanish, as I know from experience that's the best way to learn the language! I have been teaching Spanish classes virtually for the past 2 years. Many students who have taken my class did not know any Spanish at first and by the end of the school year can now confidently read in Spanish and hold a basic conversation.
Homework will be to watch an assigned video and practice the words learned for the week.
Learners have the option to bring a second device to answer trivia questions electronically. Activities for the second class of the week may require printing. Learners will be notified after the first class of the week if they need to bring anything to the next class.
Letter grade or informal assessment upon request.
1 hour per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
YouTube will be used through screen share during class and posted as assignments in the Classroom. TriviaMaker can be used during class to answer the questions and the website is posted as an optional assignment to go over the lines from the video as done in class.
