NOTE: ESSAY CLASSES WILL RUN THROUGH JUNE 15TH. THEY WILL RESUME IN THE FALL. Writing a five-paragraph essay is EASY! In this ongoing writing class, we'll begin each week with a new genre and fun writing prompt. Together, we will evolve our ideas using a graphic organizer. With this formulaic approach, getting started is actually easy because there is a step-by-step plan to get key words down on paper. After that, the writing blooms! I love this method because it allows young writers freedom to express their own ideas while at the same time strengthening unity, order and coherence. Throughout the class, we'll delve into concepts, such as: essay formulas, strong thesis sentences, figurative language, action verbs, adjectives, transitional words & phrases, etc… This class doesn't build on previous classes, so learners are welcome to join at any time. Every week a new writing prompt is introduced to keep things fresh. The class has exciting imagery and fun slides. Some of the visuals may be AI generated. I encourage output and engage the learners. Unless the writer has Outschool's pre-verification badge, writers are asked to remain on camera during class, which really helps spark some exciting writing ideas! Every class is followed up with a class recap which includes: the writing prompt, important things to remember we covered in class, and an example essay that follows the prompt for writers to use as a guideline. Each class will follow this schedule: 5 minutes: Greetings, sharing and class rules. 10 minutes: Introduction of weekly essay type & the genre writing rules. 10 minutes: Introduce Writing Prompt: Every week, a new writing prompt will be introduced. 20 minutes: Topic sentence ideas & covering how to use the graphic organizer. (Writers may jot down ideas for supporting sentences & develop examples or details.) Brainstorming options are discussed and writers share ideas. We analyze strong writing using teacher produced examples (weak/strong). We discuss how to “color” your work to produce pictures in the readers’ minds. 5 minutes: Discuss strong conclusion options. (Students may submit their completed, written work to the teacher WITHIN A WEEK for feedback. Due to the high number of completed works, I submit private, video recorded feedback 3-5 days after receiving writing.) ***This class will be canceled if the (3) student minimum isn't met.*** WEEKLY SCHEDULE: November 19-25: Persuasive (NO CLASS THURS 11/23 for the Thanksgiving holiday) November 26-December 2: Narrative December 3-9: Informative December 10-16: Persuasive December 17-23: Narrative December 24-30: Informative (**there will be NO classes 12/24 and 12/25 due to the holidays) December 31-January 6: Persuasive (**there will be NO class on 1/1 due to the holidays) January 7-13: Narrative January 14-20: Informative January 21-27: Persuasive January 28-February 3: Narrative February 4-10: Informative February 11-17: Persuasive (**there will be no class on 2/17) February 18-24: Narrative February 25-March 2: Narrative March 3-9: Informative March 10-16: Persuasive March 17-23: Narrative March 24-30: Informative March 31-April 6: Persuasive April 7-13: Narrative April 14-20: Informative April 21-April 27: Persuasive April 28-May 4: Narrative May 5-May 11: Informative May 12-May 18: Persuasive May 19-May 25: Narrative May 26-June1: Informative June 2-June 8: Persuasive June 9-June 15: Narrative
