In this flexible schedule course, students will explore Earth Science through observation and experimentation.
Class experience
Explore the wonders of the earth in this FLEX ten week Earth Science Lab course. Each week the student will conduct a fun and exciting laboratory exploration and record their findings in their Laboratory Workbook. Topics include Minerals, Plate Tectonics and Volcanoes, Cloud Formation, Aquifers and more! Student will need to purchase the "Middle School Geology Laboratory Workbook," by Rebecca W. Keller, PhD, ISBN 978-1-936114-86-3 They will also need the following general supplies: pencil pen paper scissors tape colored pencils jar tape measure ruler compas water measuring cup bowls Various labs will require the use of special supplies and are detailed in the Workbook, please check the Workbook and acquire supplies as needed. Week 3 - calcite, quartz, feldspar, hematite samples; ceramic plate Week 4 - maybe some clay? play dough? salt dough? Week 5 - brittle candy (recipe provided in workbook), peanut butter, crackers Week 6 - matches Week 7 - gravel, sand, dirt, powdered clay Week 9 - bar magnet(s) cork, steel needle
Some labs require an "assistant" to complete the experiments. One lab requires cooking in the kitchen. The student will need access to the internet and/or Library.
