Class Experience

US Grade 9 - 12
Intermediate - Advanced Level
Welcome to Semester 5 of the "Earth Science" weekly ongoing class which will be discussion classes with a lot of teacher and student interaction.

Each month we focus on a new topic and then work through some set questions together from previous New York Regents Earth Science Exams. Semester 5 can be taken without taking Semester 1 and 2, but it is recommended to do at least them first.

▬▬▬▬▬▬ CLASS SUMMARY ▬▬▬▬▬
We look at some of the most dramatic physical forces on Earth, with the aim of making learning fun and exhilarating. I think making learning enjoyable and bringing science to life is the best way to get kids engaged and learning without realising it. Each class will build on the previous class although every month a new topic (unit) will commence. However I am happy for students to join in and drop out anytime and I will make sure they are caught up on the topic of the week.

We cover all the topics I cover in my Exciting Earth Science series but can spend more time to explore each topic in more detail. All topics covered are an important part of any child's education in Geology, Meteorology, Physical Geography, Oceanography, Astronomy and Space Science.

▬▬▬▬▬ CLASS SCHEDULE ▬▬▬▬▬
Each unit has assignments and labs associated with it and there is an overall assessment using a learning portfolio. Additional materials and marking rubrics can be provided in advance on request.

*** SEMESTER 5 ***
September
Topic 1 - Plate Tectonics

October
Topic 2 - Geological Principles & Startigraphy

November
Topic 3 - Atmosphere, Oceans & Extreme Weather

*** SEMESTER 6 ***
January
Topic 4 - Physical Geography & Environmental Science

March
Topic 5 - Space Science & Astronomy

April
Topic 6 - Minerals, Gems and Precious Metals

▬▬▬▬▬▬ CLASS STYLE ▬▬▬▬▬
I use PowerPoint presentations for all my classes, so I can mix text and multimedia (photos & videos) which I think makes the class more accessible and interesting. I use educational videos regularly in my classes where this improves the quality of the teaching.

This class will be in a lecture style where students are reminded they can ask questions at any time and I do enjoy questions. This class will be more interactive and after 2 -3 weeks of intro and refresher classes we will go through some NY Regents Past Exam questions.

Please contact me to arrange either one-off or ongoing bespoke 1-to1 tuition sessions.
Learning Goals

* Determine why some fossil sites are better than others
* Analyse weather patterms & extreme weather
* Use a model to explain how the continent of North America formed
* Explain the main Ocean Structures and life systems in the Ocean
* Ask questions about Solar System and the Planets
* Engage in arguments comparing the differences between the Planets

Other Details

Parental Guidance
Some classes talks about Global Warming and Climate Change causing more frequent natural disasters. It also talks about mass extinctions including the possibility of humans causing one now (including ourselves) and has some drawn images of animals dying to become fossils. It is delivered in a upbeat manner with positive solutions (eg: switching to renewable energy), but the more sensitive students may find these topics distressing.
Pre-Requisites
Semesters 1&2 and/or Semester 3&4 Earth Science preferable but not necessary for brighter students.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
