Earth Science -- Rocks
Class experience
The students may simulate the lithification of a sedimentary rock in a paper cup, using sand, soil and/or gravel, and plaster of Paris. I will use my own rock collection to show students the differences between the different kinds, and how to know if an igneous rock is intrusive or extrusive. Students will examine the color, texture, and pattern of their rock samples, to hypothesize if they are igneous (intrusive or extrusive), sedimentary or metamorphic. In addition to these hands-on...
Students will be able to discuss the steps and processes of the Rock Cycle. Students will be able to describe features of sedimentary rocks, metamorphic rocks, and igneous rocks (both intrusive and extrusive) and apply to identifying rock samples.
I am Pennsylvania certified in Earth Science.
A few different kinds of rocks, preferably with obvious differences in color, shine, texture, etc. magnifying glass If students want to participate in "making a sedimentary rock" activity they will need: at least 2 paper cups plaster of Paris (available at a craft store) sand, gravel, and/or soil plastic spoon or something for stirring water Any notes sheets and diagrams will be provided, and should be printed out before the class begins.
