The lesson will use an orange as a model of Earth, with the peel representing the plates of the crust. Other teaching methods employed will be discussion and lecture, PowerPoint presentation, diagrams, and a notes sheet. We will use a globe to locate the home plates of each student. The lesson will cover continental drift, Pangaea, evidence of continental drift, the Theory of Plate Tectonics, and the mantle convection currents that are believed to move the plates. The difference between a theory and a scientific law will be discussed.
Learning Goals
Students will be able to define and describe continental drift and the Theory of Plate Tectonics; why it is a theory and not a scientific law.
Students will be able to discuss the evidence of continental drift and plate tectonics, and the presumed mechanism for the plate movements.

Supply List
One mandarin, clementine, or other easy peel "orange". A plate or something. Paper towels. All other needed materials will be provided. Students should print out attached notes sheets before the class begins.

Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
