The research has shown, phonological awareness is critical for learning to READ any alphabetic writing system (Ehri, 2004; Rath, 2001; Troia, 2004). This weekly class is all about phonological awareness with special focus on the sounds: /m, b, y, n, w, t, d, p, h, k, g, f, v s, z, sh, ch, th, r/. Exposing children to emerging sounds in games and play and providing models can help their sound development! I have a mouth puppet, flashcards, homemade puppets, and original videos with original songs! We also may learn songs together as a class that incorporate words with the sounds and some American Sign Language to do along with the song. Depending on the class, we may make silly phrases, create stories, sing songs, play games, watch videos and other fun activities to help practice phonological awareness. We will learn where the sound is at in words (beginning, middle or end) and what happens if we change a sound to another sound (ex. when you take away the /f/ from fun and add a /b/ to the beginning you get the word "bun." No experience is required. This class is not intended to be or replace speech therapy. This class is meant to provide some exposure and practice opportunities for students who want to build awareness of these sounds. Week 1, Feb 22: /F, V, S, Z/ Week 2: Mar 1: /K, G/ Week 3: /N, L, T, D/ Week 4: /B, P, M/ Week 5: /S,Z/ Week 6: /SH, CH, S/ Week 7: /Y, H/ and /W, R, L/ Week 8: /K, G, T, D/ Week 9: /TH/
