Class experience

US Grade Pre-Kindergarten
Beginner Level
Learners will:
✨Learn early literacy skills
✨Practice reading decodable passages aloud with support
✨Play phonics games to practice phonics skills
✨Do word activities such as Sound Boxes and Word/Picture Sorting

Homework Offered
All homework offered is not required but meant to be an optional supplement to the class. I will send you some independent work activities that your child can do during the week. Daily reading and phonics practice is beneficial for early readers!
1 - 2 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
I will do a pre-assessment during our first class together. Assessments will be done throughout the course to see how your learner is doing. We may use Nearpod as well as printable PDF materials. I will send you assessments throughout the course (just let me know what your preference is for assessments, and we can work together on that!)
Grades Offered
For this tutoring class, the following materials could be very helpful for your child's learning experience:
✨paper and something to write with (pens, pencils, markers, or even crayons are fine!)
✨a white board and dry-erase marker
✨a dry-erase clear pocket folder (for reusable activities)
✨magnetic letters (if you have them)
✨any sensory materials you have on hand, such as small countable items (like pom poms or small toys) or even playdough (optional)
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
One optional material listed below is playdough (as a sensory material to assist in learning activities). Just note that playdough does contain gluten, so if your child is sensitive to wheat or gluten, you can use other sensory materials such as small countable items instead.
For this class, we may be using a third-party app, Nearpod, for assessments and some activities. This external resource required parental consent to access. An account will not be required, however you will be asked to add your child's name when logging in using the Nearpod code I will send you. If you would rather not use Nearpod, that is totally fine! Just let me know and we will stick to paper assessments only.
For this class we will be using resources from the following sources:
Learning at the Primary Pond (early reading decodables and early literacy activities)
Reading A-Z (readinga-z.com): I will choose readers based on your child's reading level and interests. I will also send PDF worksheets that you can print to go along with our lesson.
I may also use the book The Next Step Forward in Word Study and Phonics, by Jan Richardson and Michele Dufresne, as a guide to create our individualized reading lessons.

In addition to these resources, we may also do read-alouds (this is especially important for younger children who are still just learning letters and letter sounds). The books we read in class are used as a supplemental educational resource to support what we are learning in class. It's highly encouraged that you find these books (at your public library or by purchasing them) so that you can read them with your child outside of class.

Some books we may use in class are:
The Cat in the Hat, by Dr. Seuss
Bramble and Maggie: Horse Meets Girl, by Jessie Haas and Alison Friend
Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, by Bill Martin Jr. and John Archambault
There’s a Mouse About the House, by Richard Fowler
The Princess in Black series, by Shannon and Dean Hale
Snappsy the Alligator (Did Not Ask to Be in This Book!), by Julie Falatko and Tim Miller
What Does an Anteater Eat? by Ross Collins
