Class Experience

Week 1 - What is Math? Baseline assessment
Warm up: We will play some math games using our fingers, quick look cards, missing numbers on a tape measure, hiding coins under a cup and simple mental math
Lesson: Math can be a scary word. However, math is all around us! Together we will brainstorm a list of where and how we use math in our homes everyday!
Assessment - teacher quickly assess students to get a baseline of where they started.

Week 2 - Counting forward and backward/more and less
Warm up: We will play some math games using our fingers, quick look cards, missing numbers on a tape measure, hiding coins under a cup and simple mental math
Lesson: What does forward and backward mean? Let’s walk forward, walk backward. Take # of steps forward, take # of steps backward. Forward is the same as more, backward is the same as less. Let’s take # more steps, # less steps. Counting toys/legos/coins. Add MORE, take some away = less. Practice counting on a number line more and less.

Week 3 - Counting on from any given number/more less
Warm up: We will play some math games using our fingers, quick look cards, missing numbers on a tape measure, hiding coins under a cup and simple mental math
Lesson: Through two different games, students will practice counting on from any given number 0-50. This will first be done using manipulatives, then into basic addition strategies.

Week 4 - Making 10 part 1
Warm up: We will play some math games using our fingers, quick look cards, missing numbers on a tape measure, hiding coins under a cup and simple mental math
Lesson - We will be using the strategies learned last week to make 10. For example, students will see 6 dots and asked “how many more to make 10”. Students are encouraged to count on from 6.

Week 5 - Making 10 part 2
Warm up: We will play some math games using our fingers, quick look cards, missing numbers on a tape measure, hiding coins under a cup and simple mental math
Lesson - Making 10 is such a huge part of advancing in math. We will spend this week continuing to work on strategies to make 10. How we can recognize sets of ten, counting sets of 10 and where we see 10 in our everyday lives.

Week 6 - Addition within 20 part 1
Warm up: We will play some math games using our fingers, quick look cards, missing numbers on a tape measure, hiding coins under a cup and simple mental math
Lesson: We will begin our addition lessons by counting collections. First counting two collections of materials. What is the total? Addition on a rekenrek. Covered collections.

Week 7 - Addition within 20 part 2
Warm up: We will play some math games using our fingers, quick look cards, missing numbers on a tape measure, hiding coins under a cup and simple mental math
Lesson: This week we will introduce bare number addition. I will show students the actual addition problems and we can work it out using multiple strategies and manipulatives, but also writing out the algorithm.

Week 8 - Wrap up/assessments
Warm up: We will play some math games using our fingers, quick look cards, missing numbers on a tape measure, hiding coins under a cup and simple mental math
Lesson - we will review what we have learned along with a short assessment for progress.
Learning Goals
The goal is by the end students will be able to count forward and backward from any given number within 50 as well as work through addition problems using manipulatives.
