Assessment
My assessment method is guided by the Reggio Emilia Approach to Early Childhood Education; I use tools such as observation, deep listening and open-ended questions to not only assess skills, but also (and most importantly!) to empower learners. This could also be described as informal assessment.

Class Experience

🌞 taking a hiatus from this offering🌞

In this 1:1 class I employ methods such as guided discussion, learning games, activity prompts and stories to engage learners in practicing developmentally appropriate literacy skills while exploring topics that interest them. During the first meeting I'll present a variety of age-appropriate reading & writing and numerical literacy activities, observe the learner's interests and assess their awareness of and fluency in these literacy skills. My assessment method is guided by the Reggio Emilia Approach to Early Childhood Education; I use tools such as observation, deep listening and open-ended questions to not only assess skills, but also (and most importantly!) to empower learners. The first meeting is also a time for us to build the foundation for our teacher/learner
and teacher/ family relationship. With advance notice, I am happy to offer a teacher/caregiver meeting before and/or after your child's first meeting (depending on mutual availability).

After the first week (if you choose to continue) I'll research the learner's topics of interests to create learning experiences guided by their unique interests and literacy-related needs, and your goals for their learning experience. Once we get going with the weekly routine learners can expect to experience a dynamic, yet predictable learning experience in each meeting. I design classes to offer a balance of fun opportunities to learn more about topics of interest alongside age-appropriate challenges related to literacy skills. Examples of the skills we'll explore include:

*Social-Emotional: Engaging with teacher, sharing, identifying emotions of characters in stories, etc.

*Cognitive: exploring facts, asking & answering questions, discovering & forming connections, letter sounds & word recognition, story structure, information recall

*Speech & Language: pronunciation, vocabulary, discussion, etc.

My teaching style follows the Constructivist approach. “The constructivist approach views children as active participants in their own learning. Education is then much more than rote memorization; instead, it is integrating and assimilating knowledge to be further used and explored. Constructivist strategies seek to ignite a child's curiosity and love of learning.” (Dalcour)

Learners will have the opportunity to interact during each session through show & tell and guided discussion (an active learning technique that encourages students to reflect on their own experiences, explore alternative ways of thinking, connect to a topic, and improve analytical skills).

Please let me know if you have any questions!
