This class will teach young students the basics needed for writing. Each week, we will focus on 2 different parts of speech, 1 type of sentence, and standard use of capitalization and punctuation. I will begin each lesson with a discussion that will explain the meaning of the parts of speech and type of sentence that are the focus of the week, as well as a review of those taught during previous weeks (during week 1, we will identify the 8 parts of speech and 4 types of sentences during the time set for review). Next, I will show students a few mentor sentences. We will identify the parts of speech, capital letters, and punctuation used in each sentence. Then, students will have time to write their own sentences. Finally, students will share the sentences they wrote with the class. I will use slides during the discussion. The information will also be available in an optional printable you may print before class. Please check messages before the class starts to create a game card for "I have, who has." (Instructions will be available on classroom page). We will play this game with some variations each week. We will also have games available on Kahoot. Students should be willing to write using both upper and lowercase letters in either print or cursive, and be willing to sound out words or comfortable asking classmates for assistance when unsure of spelling.
