Early Elementary Emotions Exploration With Mrs. Peterman

Let's join together in a neurodivergent-supportive space to explore a variety of basic every day emotions! Learners will explore a slide deck of realistic images & videos that depict familiar emotional experiences and practice associating them with sensations. Essential Question: What are the basic human emotions and how do they show up in the body? Outcomes: I can talk about 4 emotions with my grown up I can match 4 emotions with 4 common sensations in the body. I can use basic emotional language with my grown up.
I am a highly qualified special education professional with dual-certifications in both general education (k-6) and special education (k-12) in the state of Tennessee, a bachelor's degree in dual childhood and special education, as well as a master's degree in differentiated instruction & gifted education. I have 9+ years experience in social/emotional learning, behavior intervention, and executive function training. Throughout my career, I have garnered accolades such as tenure, 2020 Teacher of the Year, & Level 5/5 teacher evaluation scores. I am a practitioner of the Universal Design for Learning paradigm, CASEL competencies for social/emotional learning, and non-violent crisis intervention/de-escalation framework. I have extensive leadership experience in developing and maintaining school-wide behavior management implementations using PBIS, restorative practices, and Zones of Regulation. I have built many sensory rooms, trained countless staff on sensory integration best practices, and lead year long implementations of student sensory techniques in the general education & special education settings.

This course will not require any homework but learners are encouraged to have conversations after the class using the learned emotional vocabulary.Assessments Offered
In the final 3rd of the session, learners will practice using a sentence stem to demonstrate their knowledge of emotions and sensory foundations. This will allow all stakeholders to evaluate learner progress toward outcomes.Grades Offered
Learners are encouraged to bring any sensory fidgets or tools along to support engagement.
This course will discuss the sensitive topic of emotional regulation. Students may discuss personal experiences relating to basic emotions (i.e. I feel mad when my sister takes me toys) but are not required to do so. Hypothetical situations will be provided via realistic images in order to help students progress toward the session's objectives. I am a highly qualified special education professional with extensive experience and training in the areas of social-emotional learning, behavior intervention, and sensory-integrated de-escalation strategies. All family types, ability levels, and neurotypes are welcomes in this learning environment and I will do my best to create & maintain a trauma-informed, restorative, and respectful learning environment.
