Ear Training: Basic Introduction (Self-Paced)
In this 11-week series of online, pre-recorded video flex classes, students will internalize musicfrom conducting, singing (using solfege syllabes), and notating/writing and transcribing music; the course will cover topics such as how to transcribe popular chord patterns, mapping song forms, and rhythmic dictation, enabling students to succeed in a contemporary music class by the Music & Language Learning Center by Kristine Dizon.

In this course, you will learn how to internalize music through conducting, singing (using solfege syllabus), and notating/writing and transcribing music. The class will begin with the examining of rhythm and pulse that drives and measures, the music, and use this as a foundation for better understanding exactly what we hear. From this basis, we will sing and notate melodies and harmonies using various contemporary tunes as models. Learners will be provided a series of listening examples and recordings that they will use for their assignments provided by the instructor. Learners will be able to share the words that they chose in the classroom and share their ideas about the connection between rhythm and words. 𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝟓: 𝐌𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐝𝐲 + 𝐁𝐚𝐬𝐬 𝐋𝐢𝐧𝐞 = 𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐲 Learners will learn about the relationship between the melody and bass line. Learners will be provided exercises on singing melody parts and how to hear the two voices separately from one another in the classroom and receive individual feedback from the instructor. There will be a discussion that will take place via commentary regarding how to approach listening to both voices simultaneously and separately. 𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝟔: 𝐏𝐢𝐭𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐬 + 𝐑𝐡𝐲𝐭𝐡𝐦𝐬 = 𝐁𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐎𝐫𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐝 Learners will develop their understanding of how pitches and rhythms are organized. There will be simple exercises provided to the learners that focus on singing intervals and rhythms. There will also be an in-class discussion on how to further develop these skills. 𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝟕: 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐏𝐨𝐩𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐂𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐝 𝐏𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐌𝐚𝐣𝐨𝐫 Learners will learn how to transcribe popular chord patterns in major keys. There will be several prepared examples that will be performed by recording where learners will be able to transcribe the chords using MuseScore (music notation software). 𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝟖: 𝐈𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧 𝐚 𝐌𝐚𝐣𝐨𝐫 𝐨𝐫 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐨𝐫 𝐊𝐞𝐲? Learners will develop their skills in key identification through multiple examples provided by the instructor and techniques that will help learners develop their understanding of major and minor keys. There will be a class discussion on what is a major or minor scale where learners will be able to provide their response on what they are. 𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝟗: 𝐌𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐦 Learners will learn how to map out songs through active listening. There will be examples provided by the instructor that will help engage learners in identifying patterns in melodies & chords to understand different song forms. 𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝟏𝟎: 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐨𝐫 𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐌𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐒𝐨𝐥𝐟𝐞𝐠𝐞 Learners will continue to develop their understanding of minor key melodies through solfege. There will be a series of melodies where learners will have to identify what makes it a minor key and the differences between the major keys. There will be a classroom discussion on how to approach key identification in the classroom. 𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝟏𝟏: 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐏𝐨𝐩𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐂𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐨𝐫 Learners will be provided resources on how to transcribe popular chords in minor keys through a step-by-step process. There will be a series of chords the instructor will perform which learners will transcribe using musical notation software (Musescore). Learners will also be able to discuss how to approach chord transcription in the classroom. This course will use video examples, and assignment explanations, and will provide feedback. Each lesson is a combination of lectures via PowerPoint, listening, and written discussion about the material covered in the lesson. Students will also complete melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic dictation throughout the course. The teacher will post questions in the classroom to encourage class discussion that will reflect the material that they have learned. Students will complete their ear training assignments in the form of a recording and upload to the classroom where the instructor will provide feedback to the learner for their work. There will be melodic and rhythmic dictations where learners will interact with the instructor via video. There will also be different music applications used for the course that will encourage interaction between learners.
