Class Experience

In this course, you will learn how to internalize music through conducting, singing (using solfege syllabus), notating/writing and transcribing music. The class will begin with the examining of rhythm and pulse that drives and measures, the music, and use this as a foundation for better understanding exactly what we hear. From this basis, we will sing and notate melodies and harmonies using various contemporary tunes as models.

This course will use video examples, assignment explanations, and provide feedback. Each lesson is a combination of lectures via PowerPoint, listening, and written discussion about the material covered in the lesson. Students will also complete melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic dictation throughout the course. Students will complete their ear training assignments in the form of a recording and upload it to the classroom, where the instructor will provide feedback to the learner for their work. There will be melodic and rhythmic dictations where learners will interact with the instructor via video. There will also be different music applications used for the course that will encourage interaction between learners.

Learning Goals

Students will learn to identify, feel, and perform rhythmic patterns and pulse, using these foundational skills to guide accurate listening, singing, and notation of music.
