This class is designed for the beginning to beginning/intermediate piano student. We will focus on learning to navigate the keyboard by learning to identify melodies and sound qualities such as major and minor chords. We will learn and practice playing melodies by ear, and students will learn to improvise in the pentatonic and C major scales. Students will also play rhythm and clapping games and will have an introduction to written music, although we will not be using books in this course....
Examples of topics covered: Is it major or minor? I will play chords or triads and students will identify the quality of each type of chord and which it is that they are hearing. They will also practice playing the major and minor chords and triads themselves. Students will learn simple melodies and a Bach minuet by ear, memorizing it without having to read the music notes. Students will learn about the pentatonic scale and the C major scale and how you can easily improvise your own melody within either scale. We will work on learning a basic triad/chord pattern and use all five fingers to play a melody.
Aurore has been teaching piano off and on for over twenty years and has been a performing musician. She also teaches math and language arts classes for Outschool.
Students will be expected to practice any melodies or portions of songs that we've learned so that they remember them the following week and we can move on together as a class.
A piano or weighted keyboard that has at least several octaves.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Each student will play for everyone else at least one song that we've learned and that they have memorized by ear on the last day of class. Students will also be asked to share improvised melodies or songs that they have come up with while practicing if they are comfortable doing so.
30 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
I use exercises from the Dozen a Day series, which is a great simple technique building approach to learning basic piano skills. All material will be learned by ear in this class, but we will discuss written music as well.
