Class Experience

US Grade 6 - 9
If you enjoy dystopian novels like The Hunger Games, Divergent, or The Testing, you will love Red Queen. Victoria Aveyard creates a world where a super-powered elite with silver blood rules over the masses of red blooded commoners. This thrilling story follows Mare Barrow as she realizes that she has power she never knew she had and finds herself swept up in an adventure she never asked for.

In this four-week class, learners will participate in meaningful discussions and engaging activities as we read the novel together. Book clubs are an excellent way to engage reluctant readers or help enthusiastic readers dig a little deeper. Students will need their own copy of the text to complete assigned readings before attending class. We will explore the text and it's themes through discussion and a variety of engaging critical thinking activities. Class will be conducted in a casual, book club style with plenty of time for discussion.

As we discuss the book we will work on:
-expressing our thoughts and opinions and listening to others
-comprehension
-prediction
-character analysis
-plot development

The reading schedule will be as follows:

Lesson 1: chapters 1-7
Discussion and activities will focus on author and setting

Lesson 2: chapters 8-14
Focus on character contrast and development

Lesson 3: chapters 15-21
Focus on plot and predictions

Lesson 4: chapters 22-epilogue (finish book)
Focus on themes developed through the story

Almost one year on Outschool and loving every minute of it!

I am passionate about building authentic positive relationships with my students. By modeling healthy relationships and creating a safe place for them to flourish, I hope to give my students life skills beyond the content I teach. I create safe, inviting spaces for kids to build relationships with other students, practicing the skills of empathy in the context of a caring community.

My husband and I have two daughters and two dogs. I love to read, bake, and knit (but not all at the same time!). I can't wait to see you in class!
