Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 6
The Orton-Gillingham method is a multi-sensory approach to to teaching reading. It begins with simple sound symbol relationships then progresses to more complex concepts. Each lesson is presented to students using their visual, auditory, and kinesthetic pathways. This method is designed to specifically assist students with dyslexia.

In this class students will learn all consonants and vowel sounds including blends. They will read multi-syllable words (such as division and machine) and practice all syllabication patterns. As the class progresses, students will be able to read longer sentences and read with greater fluency. Students will practice fluency weekly on a speed reading chart. This is a key element in their reading so they can become faster and more confident in reading words in isolation and within sentences.

Lessons are presented live through an engaging powerpoint that takes students systematically through the sounds and words to practice weekly. Parents are given access to decodable readers and the speed reading chart that has the sounds readers have learned so they can practice while out of class.

Each class students will:
-Practice writing and saying all previously taught sounds
-Write words with consonant blends and vowel teams
-Read words with previously taught sounds
-Learn a new concept
-Practice the new concept
-Learn a new sight word
