Class Experience

The Science of Reading discipline informs us that phonological awareness training should be part of every student's reading instruction.  In particular, children who have low phonological awareness are most susceptible to developing dyslexia, but that with comprehensive phonological awareness training, the onset of dyslexia may be avoided.

This one-time session is comprised of several sets of tasks that are somewhat game-like and are meant to identify students who will best be served by comprehensive phonological awareness training.  

Parents will receive a summary of the assessment to include the child's performance in comparison to expected performance by age.

Learning Goals

The goal of the PAST is to determine at what level your child performs in phonemic and phonological awareness.  Students that perform significantly below their age level may be able to be remediated and avoid the onset of dyslexia.

Parents are recommended to read "Overcoming Dyslexia" by Sally Shaywitz, M.D., and "Equipped for Reading Success" by Dr. David Kilpatrick, Ph.D. if they have concerns about dyslexia.
