Class Experience

Students will:
begin to be able to organise their thoughts and ideas for imaginative writing into a plan
create a vocabulary bank
begin to understand how to expand their words into phrases
gain a deeper understanding of various writing terms and learn how to start using them in their own writing
start to use their descriptive language ideas effectively in their writing.
Writing is my passion and as well as majoring in English at university, along with Theatre Arts, I've almost 20 years of experience in teaching English in primary schools (4-11-year-olds). Over those years I have worked regularly with groups of children specifically on English writing skills.
I have a wide range of experience in editing and proofreading others’ work; both fiction and non-fiction.

No homework is set for this class but learners may choose to write their stories in their own time, as the main focus of the class is on planning and working on descriptive language with smaller writing tasks in class. If time permits, learners may begin writing their stories in the class writing time.
 2 files available upon enrollment
Essential: A notebook or several sheets of paper and something to write with, or a device to use for writing. Useful but not necessary: A small whiteboard may be handy.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Informal assessment during class.
Please note that ongoing classes are designed for students to be able to 'dip' in and out or stay and as such, individual progress reports do not form part of this class.
55 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
Content is age-appropriate to the advertised age range. Parents, please use your own judgement if your child is outside that range. As the course looks at descriptive writing in more detail, students will expected to be able to work at a more in-depth level and have a basic understanding of nouns, verbs and adjectives.
Some photos/ illustrations may be used to help with descriptive language (which will be my own photos, pictures created by me or shared from a source with permission). All will be age-appropriate. All other content will be created by me.
