Class Experience

Who is this class for?
This class is for students wanting to join an ongoing campaign while also learning and practicing social skills. Whether you have zero experience or have been playing Dungeons and Dragons for years, this group is for you! While anyone can join this class, it is geared towards students who want to gain increased social skills, impulse control, and/or emotional regulation. We specialize in working with children with diagnosis such as autism, ADHD, anxiety, and related disorders which can be seen in the change in pace, willingness to address behaviors/concerns in session, and ability to work with a variety of learning styles. This class is taught by a Licensed Practicing Counselor with over 12 years experience working with adolescents with mental and behavioral health and a Mental Health Professional with over 8 years of experience with mental and behavioral health.

What will this class entail?
During this interactive class, we will either teach you the basics of DnD or help you increase your knowledge of the DnD world, while also learning and practicing a variety of social skills. At the start of every session, a new social skill will be introduced and you will be encouraged and assisted in utilizing this skill both in and out of character. At the end of the session, use of the social skill will be reviewed and students will be given feedback and further training if needed.
This is an ongoing campaign that will last 10-14 weeks. Time frame is dependent upon the choices made by learners in character.

What to expect? Students will utilize their previously made character to delve into the continent of Faerun where they will experience a new world filled with adventure, magic and mystery! You, along with your fellow adventurers will be on a critical mission with an outcome that is dependent upon the choices you make. You will either reap great rewards or possible devastation to you, your group, or the world around you.
Students can expect equal parts of role play and battles-group leaders assist in role play to alleviate anxiety.

Learning Goals

A specific social skill will be taught and focused on during every session. Social skills will be chosen both on what group leader feels would be helpful and input from parents (if desired). Learners will be encouraged to practice skill both in and out of session and process their use of the skill at the end of each session.
