Class Experience

Playing Dungeons & Dragons is an active exploration of imagination. It’s a game of interactive storytelling, where YOU get to help create the story and experience adventures with your friends.

In this class, we’ll learn the basics of how the game works. We'll also learn a little bit about statistics, logic, problem solving, critical thinking, and group cooperation and dynamics along the way. Afterwards, you might just decide that you want to create a character and join in a game!

What will we do in class?

This is a seminar-style class where I’ll share the background and basics of the game. I hope you bring your questions and your excitement, too, as I’ll be asking questions and looking for your involvement throughout the class. Together we’ll go over:

     - What is D&D all about?
     - What is tabletop role playing? How does it work?
     - What kinds of attributes like race, class, skills, and abilities can characters have?
     - How can I make an awesome character?
     - What are the basic rules?
     - What are all those dice for? (Hint: We get to learn a little bit about probability and statistics!)
     - If all this sounds like fun, what’s the next step to getting into playing D&D?

Who is this class for?

This class is for students who expressed an interest in Dungeons & Dragons, but haven’t had much (or any!) opportunity yet to play the game. Complete beginners and people with just a bit of D&D experience are all welcome. If you love to read adventure or fantasy stories, or have always enjoyed playing make-believe, you’ll probably love Dungeons & Dragons.

What if I want more advanced training?

If you like what you learn in this intro class, the next step is to create a character you can use to play with. I can teach you how in my class Dungeons & Dragons Character Creation: The Basics (CC1). You can find it here: https://tinyurl.com/y63b2egs.

And if you're ready to start playing, think about joining the D&D Adventure Club, which meets Friday each week. More info at: https://tinyurl.com/yy7ux48u.

Learning Goals

You'll learn the fundamentals of the game Dungeons & Dragons. This includes an overview of the rules, the characters that can be played, and how in-game decisions and outcomes are determined. D&D is a complex game with an expansive rule set, so this course will cover the basics only. You'll walk away with a better understanding of how the game works, and what your next steps should be if you want to learn more or join a group and begin to play.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I’ve played and been a dungeon master (DM) for every version of D&D created, from the original box sets to the current 5th edition. And I still love it. Why? Because imagination matters. Storytelling matters. Myths and legends and adventures aren’t just something to watch in the movies, they are something for us to live and create and experience together.

No matter who you are or where you’re from, I want to help you tell your story. I want to help unlock your imagination and work together to create the world that you want to be in and explore. As a D&D teacher and DM, that’s what I do – create an open and accepting space where you can have some fun and be yourself, through the lens of wild and fantastical characters.
