Class Experience

Welcome to Dungeons and Dragons! In this weekly ongoing class, we will work together as an adventuring party to explore the world, solve mysteries, unravel the dastardly plots of villains, and develop our heroes. Players should have a basic understanding of D&D 5th Edition, but in-depth knowledge of the rules is not necessary.

***Please note***
Role-playing in this environment is intended to be cooperative, not competitive. Any players who use their character to antagonize other players will be first politely asked to cooperate. Should antagonizing continue, the offending player will be removed from the group. Please make sure your learner is seeking a cooperative gaming experience.
***Thank you***

The first story we will play is the module: Dragon of Icespire Peak. Phandalin is a small mining town in the mountains of the Sword Coast. Abandoned generations ago after a hoard of orcs rampaged through the land, it has found new life as residents from nearby cities have rebuilt it atop the ruins of the old town. Now, as Phandalin is on the verge of returning to its former glory, rumors of a dragon in the nearby mountains cast an eerie shadow over the town. Furthermore, other monsters have been sighted nearby, possibly displaced by the dragon. What does this mean for the inhabitants of Phandalin? What refuge can they seek from the new threats? Will they be forced to abandon the town they have worked so hard to rebuild? Perhaps an intrepid group of adventurers (That's you.) is the answer to their problems.

This is a great module for both new and experienced players. It begins at level 1 and progresses through around level 10. When that is finished, we will begin a new module. Players can keep their same characters or make new ones at their own discretion.

Each session, we will spend the first five to fifteen minutes recapping the previous adventure and discussing plans the the upcoming one. We will orient new players as needed during this time to get them up to speed on prior events. This is also a good time to iron out character details, purchase equipment, etc. We will provide a few minutes at the end for debriefing and tying up loose ends as well.

New players are always welcome, and their characters will be added into the story as seamlessly as possible. For your first session, please bring a character that you would like to play (at least know race and class). It's ok if the character's backstory is vague, since they will be inserted into an existing storyline. Please contact me before class to find out what level the party is and other details. If you're joining at the last minute, I'll have some premade characters ready for use and you can make changes to them between sessions.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
Learners will be role-playing fantasy characters. The world of D&D is full of mystery and adventure, and the characters may find themselves in dangerous situations. Should tragedy befall a hero, the player will be issued a new character, much like respawning in a video game. Fret not, you are not "out" like in dodgeball. In any role-playing environment, some players may attempt to discuss "heavy" or sensitive topics. Role-play should be light-hearted and fun, so the more sensitive stuff can happen "off-screen" or between adventures. In-game discussions will be monitored and redirected if they approach inappropriate topics.
Supply List
Players are encouraged to create a free account on Roll20.net. This will be used to control the tokens on the virtual tabletop. Some players may find it useful to use Zoom and Roll20 on separate devices.

No dice needed! All rolls will be made on the Roll20 virtual tabletop.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
