Beginner - Intermediate Level
New players are welcomed and encouraged to try Dungeon and Dragons through a low-commitment environment! This class uses 5th Edition 2014 Legacy rules. My Classroom: LGBTQIA+ and Neurodiverse inclusive. I have worked on Outschool the past 5 years mainly in group classes to foster community, inclusivity, and collaboration. I value each of my students by encouraging them to share their thoughts, opinions, and interests while helping them see that same value and respect for each other despite their differences. This means that students will address each other with the proper names and pronouns if a student wishes to share them. No one is forced to share and is only at the level of their comfort and discretion. This class is a collaborative, team-building game where it's highly discouraged (and consequential) to split up the group of characters in-game. Player against player interactions are not allowed. Students will need a form of dice set (virtual or real) and will be rolling on the honor system. If there is any indication of "high-roll" cheating, it will be addressed by the teacher and possible need for every student to show their dice rolls could be a consequence. "Meta-gaming": This is highly discouraged in order to have fun for the whole group. Students will be asked to please separate their player game knowledge of monster stats or looking up the story from their character knowledge of the world. Students are encouraged to think of creative solutions for conveying such information without breaking the role-play experience. Any disregard to the rules will be addressed with possible withdrawal from the class if needed. Week 1: Students will come together to build and create their characters and the group dynamic for the role-playing game. Students will create characters backgrounds and reasons why their characters are in a group together. They will also create character sheets based off the 2014 Dungeons and Dragons rules set and can use DNDBeyond.com as a resource for character stats. Students will also express to the group or to the teacher privately (student decision) on what is uncomfortable for them in a role-playing game in order for the teacher to adjust the story to each group of players. Week 2: Part 1 of our horror house adventure game. Students will role-play to work together to solve the mysteries of this house. This part is heavy role-play investigation on what secrets the house is holding which create a gothic, dark storyline of what happened to the family in the house. Week 3: Part 2 of our horror house adventure game. Students will see if they'll be able to escape the monsters of the house now that they've uncovered its secrets. This session will be more "combat"-orientated as a role-playing game where students can imaging fighting with weaponry.
Learning Goals
Students will be able to create a role-play character complete with background information and abilities.
Students will work together as a group to solve a story puzzle.
Other Details
Learning Needs
This class encourages role-play and a "yes, and" mindset in improv. Neurodiverse students are welcomed as the teacher makes sure students are listening and working together in collaboration.
Parental Guidance
This one-shot is a heavy Victorian-style, gothic horror story. Students will encounter topics such as infidelity, death, cultists, child abandonment, ghosts, and murder. Students role-playing will have to interact and fight various fantasy monsters from Dungeon and Dragons (including, not limited to: ghosts, ghasts, soul-sucking shadows, animated armor, swarms of insects, ghouls, e.t.c.). These fights will be described verbally how a student has their character use a weapon.
Students will also be faced with tough decisions as characters that may challenge their thoughts and perspectives of the real world. The teacher will make sure that the story is adjusted accordingly to what each player/group is comfortable within such topics. If a student is not comfortable with an above topic, the teacher will work to make it implicit story-telling for the story or remove it entirely depending on the level of comfort.
Please reach out if have any questions or concerns.
Supply List
Students are welcome to have pencil/pen and paper in class to take notes but are not required. Students will need a form of dice set, whether virtual or in-person.
