Dungeons and Dragons Horror Mystery: Mansion of Madness
What's included
1 live meeting
2 hrs 55 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
This beginner-friendly game will thrust players into a home-brewed horrifying mystery, where they will survive based on their deductive wit, their problem-solving skills and their ability to work as a team. Over the course of 3 hours we will build a collaborative story, with players contributing to the development of the setting, characters and plot, focusing on improvisation, character development and descriptive narration. Parents and students should be aware that this adventure is specifically horror-themed and will include fantasy violence. Students will have the opportunity to let me know of specific content and dynamics they would like left out of the game, and they will at any time be able to redirect content they find triggering, but players should be prepared to explore horror as a genre. I will serve as the Dungeon Master, a facilitator role through which I lay the framework for the plot and the setting while ensuring that the game continues at a satisfying pace and that all players feel comfortable and engaged. We will be focused on evocative descriptions, building the world imaginatively rather than through specific visual depictions. Players will be expected to add color and descriptive detail not only to their own characters and actions, but also to the world we are building together. Players can either create a Level 1 character using the point-buy rules established in the Player's Handbook or can use a pre-generated character I provide. We will run the class entirely through zoom, with no additional resources required.

Parental Guidance
Parents and students should be aware that this adventure is specifically horror-themed and will include fantasy violence. Students will have the opportunity to let me know of specific content and dynamics they would like left out of the game, and they will at any time be able to redirect content they find triggering, but players should be prepared to explore horror as a genre.
Horror themes we will explore include mortality, paranoia and possession. We will not be exploring body horror/extreme gore or any explicit sexual content, nor will these themes be permitted. I have not included more specific descriptions here to avoid spoiling plot elements, but concerned players or parents can reach out to me any time and I would be happy to answer any questions.
Supply List
Students would benefit from ample paper and pencils, to keep track of clues and leads. Students would also benefit from a complete set of RPG dice, but there are free online simulations that work just as well.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
I'm a singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist with over 10 years of experience offering private guitar, bass and ukulele lessons. I believe that music is primarily and most importantly meant to be an enjoyable means of creative self expression and entertainment, and as such my teaching puts a strong emphasis on ensuring that learning an instrument is a fun and engaging experience.
I strive to create classes that build a strong musical foundation for my students without sacrificing the playful and fun nature of making music and exploring sound. As such, my classes will heavily be based on the learning of popular and well-known music from a variety of genres and time periods, even using songs from movies, TV and video games to help make practice feel more like play than work. We'll learn core skills like chords, scales, arpeggios and rhythm through songs, solos and riffs, not abstract exercises.
For private lessons, my curriculum is heavily personalized to fit the needs and preferences of each student, choosing whenever possible to pull from songs and artists the student is already familiar with to teach new techniques and concepts. I've taught an extremely wide range of styles and genres, but my personal musical background is primarily in Punk, Indie, Ska, Rock, Folk, and Flamenco. Students can expect to develop a repertoire of their favorite songs, learn basic upkeep and maintenance of their instrument, and build an understanding of and confidence in their ability to express themselves through their own improvisation and songwriting.
