Welcome to the Tournament of Time! In this ongoing series of custom made one-shot encounters, we'll continue to learn how to play Dungeons and Dragons. In this new format, created just for Outschool, learners can choose to bring their own character each week - or choose from a list of pre-made characters instead. You can use the same character as often as you'd like, or try a new one each session. Do you want to focus on building the perfect elven ranger, or try to experiment with something new? Randomized challenges, environments, hazards, and items, ensure that each session is exciting, educational, and unique. Weekly Format: --------------------- Each session can be played completely stand-alone. That means you can jump in and out as needed without missing any vital parts of an ongoing story - as you would in a traditional linear campaign. Each self-contained session goes a bit like this: 1. First we briefly introduce our characters. You can bring a new character each meeting to try out the classes and abilities that you've chosen, or you can return each week with the same one. 2. I roll the dice to decide the environment, hazards, and rewards, from a pool of semi-randomized options. 3. Then, we play! Each encounter is combat focused, but will always allow opportunity for exploration, teamwork, critical thinking, and creative problem solving. 4. At the end of each session we'll review our team's successes and failures and discuss ways we can improve our strategies for the next challenge! Important Notes: --------------------- I strongly recommend basic familiarity with the 5th edition Dungeons and Dragons ruleset. For absolute beginners, I recommend first taking my one-time introductory course on Outschool titled: "Dungeons and Dragons Crash Course for Absolute Beginners", followed by my introductory adventure: "Dungeons and Dragons Beginners Adventure: The Red Raven". You can find all of my available classes on my teacher profile page. If you've taken any of my adventure courses, then you're ready for this one too! To make room for a wide range of schedules, this class does not meet every single week. Instead, we'll follow a general pattern of two weeks on, one week off. There will be slight variations based on holidays and so on, but I'll always ensure that the updated schedule is visible at least four weeks in advance. Outschool will only charge you for the weeks that we meet and play. Full character creation will not be covered in this class. Instead, I will provide a selection of premade characters to choose from each session - or bring your own! Use of DNDBeyond.com digital character sheets is required.
Learning Goals
This class is focused on mastering the basics of the Dungeons and Dragons player's ruleset, with an emphasis on combat mechanics. We will be sticking as close to the rules-as-written (RAW) as possible. This includes restricting abilities and items to the core and official guidelines. The goal is for this class to be a fun and fair space for you to test out official classes, abilities, and items, all while learning how they perform when put up against a true challenge.
On top of learning game-specific rules and mechanics, students will be engaged in an ongoing guided lesson of interpersonal group dynamics, sharing responsibility and trust, and conflict resolution in pursuit of a common goal.

Parental Guidance
This course will involve some medieval fantasy-style action and combat, including bows and arrows, swords, magic, monsters, and life and death situations.
This course does require the use of DNDBeyond.com - the official Wizards of the Coast tool for managing characters and campaigns. This allows me to automatically import characters and stats directly into the virtual tabletop that I use during gameplay. This ensures that we always have fair and up to date character information on the screen for everyone to see. This also helps keep the action moving - and that means we get to play more D&D!
This means that you or your learner must first sign up for a free account here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/
Once you have an account, you can then create your digital character sheets. Here is a great resource on how to do so: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1059-how-to-create-your-first-dungeons-dragons
Note that you are not required to log in or use DNDBeyond during our sessions together. I'll only need a one-time link to the character sheet. The exact details on how to share this link will be available after signup.
If you have any questions or concerns about using DNDBeyond and how I will use it in class, please feel free to reach out!

Hello! I'm Joey and I'm excited to meet you. As a parent, I understand how vital early childhood education is. The fact that you are here, searching for the best instructor for your learners, means that you know how important it is too. I take this responsibility seriously, and work hard to provide individual attention and support to all of my students.
I've worked professionally as a software developer, as well as an adjunct college professor teaching introductory and advanced computer programming courses. My passions and class topics are wide ranging, from tabletop role-playing games to 3D modeling, astronomy, and art! To each of my classes I bring the same philosophy: that we truly grow when we connect what we learn to what is important to us. No matter if it's academic study or a social activity, I teach with the intention of inspiring students to make those connections and get excited about learning. I can't wait to see you in class!
