Class Experience

This is a four day class. We will meet four times over a one week period.

Table-top RPGs can be a powerful medium for collective storytelling. This class will introduce learners to the craft, and help them to hone their skills through playing their own unique adventure. We will use the most well known table-top RPG system, Dungeons and Dragons 5e (D&D).

There are many different styles of playing D&D. Our game will be one that embraces role playing and exploration. While combat may be present, creative problem solving will be our main focus. This is not a “dungeon crawl” kind of game.

Day One:
This will be our “Session Zero”, in which we create characters together, learn the rules of the game, and discuss hopes and expectations for the rest of the game.

Days Two-Four:
These weeks we will get into the story itself. Each session will have two sections. The first section will be the “Game Play”, while the second will be our “Table Talk” in which the players and DM reflect upon the game session just played, provide constructive feed back, and discuss how to improve.

Students will learn:
How to play D&D
How to collaborate with teammates (other players and DM) to tell a good story
How to develop an interesting and satisfying character even if you aren’t an actor
What to expect when joining another in-person or virtual D&D game.

The Game:
Your party of level one adventures works for the Gyfrinach Archives. From time to time you are called upon to retrieve precious magical artifacts or escort dangerous creatures to safety. Your travels take you to the strangest reaches of Faerûn, and sometimes beyond, into the Elemental Planes or even the Nine Hells!

The setting is based in The Forgotten Realms, which is the primary setting for Dungeons and Dragons.

Every game is unique. The themes, story, and characters will shift according to the interests of the players and the characters they make. Because of this, each session of this class I run has a different story, so learners are more than welcome to take it multiple times!

Other Details

Parental Guidance
PG13 level content. There will be several combat scenarios, however mindless violence will not be tolerated and all in game actions will have natural consequences (for example if a character is caught stealing they will go to jail). We will discuss each person's comfort level and whether they have themes they are uncomfortable with during session zero.
Supply List
Learners will need:
- A blank 5e character sheet (printable PDF provided).
- At least one set of dice (d20, d12, d10, d8, d6, and d4). Instead of physical dice, they could use a dice rolling app, however real dice are preferable.
- paper and an erasable pencil or pen

Some may also find it helpful to have a copy of the Players Handbook (Dungeons and Dragons) 2014. I will provide a PDF of the basic rule set for those who do not have the book.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
