Welcome to D&D! There's much adventuring to do, and before we do that, parents its important you know what our classes are all about. All our ongoing campaigns focus on building what we call "employment skills", such as team work, integrity, accountability, and problem solving abilities. Our games, run by professional educators who train together on our core principles, focus on the learning process, not just the game product. This is more than just "adventuring". Its structured skill building through imaginative play. We're excited you're here. This campaign course is the intended follow up adventure for students who have reached level three in either our DnD Club Academy Icespire Peak camp, our D&D 100 Camp, or by completing our introductory series through D&D 105. Players will enter at level three. This campaign is roughly 40% social roleplay, 30% exploration, and 30% combat. Adventure Overview: Under raging storm clouds, the vampire Count Strahd von Zarovich stands silhouetted against the ancient walls of Castle Ravenloft. Rumbling thunder pounds the castle spires. The wind’s howling increases as he turns his gaze down toward the village of Barovia. Far below, yet not beyond his keen eyesight, a party of adventurers has just entered his domain. Strahd’s face forms the barest hint of a smile as his dark plan unfolds. He knew they were coming, and he knows why they came — all according to his plan. A lightning flash rips through the darkness, but Strahd is gone. Only the howling of the wind fills the midnight air. The master of Castle Ravenloft is having guests for dinner. And you are invited. STUDENT EXPECTATIONS: Students agree adhere to our core philosophy that roleplaying games are team based, inclusive, and supportive of fellow players. Students will strive, to the best of their abilities, to help each other both in and out of game. Any deliberate behavior to negatively impact another player's character or make students feel excluded will be cause for potential removal from the course without refund. This is at the discretion of the DM and Adam Scott, the DnD Club head teacher. If you've never played D&D before, we recommend our 101-103 games. Our style of games emphasizing fairness, teamwork, and cooperative learning are very popular with most students, and it is recommended your student becomes familiar with DnD Club Academy's style before committing to a long term session. Students who follow these guidelines tend to have much better long term experiences with roleplaying games, and especially our campaigns. As this is a subscription based course students are welcome to join so long as space is available and they meet the course prerequisite. Updates are provided each week for students joining after the beginning of a storyline, and the DMs make a specific effort to ensure that everybody feels not just welcomed but included. What if you've never played an RPG, what is it like? Role-playing games are player driven, putting you and your character at the center of the plot. Your choices will decide the outcome: from heroic victory to an untimely end. We're here to tell a great story that makes you feel like you're in your favorite book or movie. More importantly, these games allow us to work on problem solving, team building, and social skills. Ultimately, they are a lot of fun, and you won't even realize you're learning until you far into your quest. Who will like this class? 1) Players who understand the basic mechanics of D&D, and have enough knowledge to either create or select a character. 2) Players who want to explore a world, discover exciting places, and make complicated decisions. 3) Players who are interested in developing a story, interacting with quirky, noble, and sometimes nefarious characters. 4) Working together with other players to solve problems, and have a great time in the process! As a professional educators and game masters, we know how to make adventures all about the players and mesh different learning styles into a cohesive group. This adventure is scheduled to last about 13-15 weeks. It may go longer depending on student interest and for the unique nature of each group's story. New students are welcome to join the class so long as space permits. Missing a week: most students who enroll in the course do so for the full duration. This is not required. When a student "withdrawals" from the class, this will open a spot for another player. If a student needs to miss a week due to an appointment, they may notify the DnD Club at least 48 hours in advance, and receive a 50% refund for that week's enrollment. This "holds the seat" for the student. Parents may use this option once per section. Note regarding late arrivals: As this is a roleplaying experience that is based on the personalities of the players, abrupt inclusion of a new participant often disrupts the quality of the session for all involved. Students who arrive late to a session will be admitted at a time that does not disrupt the action. Accordingly, they may be asked to wait until next meeting or session. Refunds will be granted at the discretion of the instructor. Please communicate ahead of time if there are any potential scheduling/tech challenges for a scheduled section. Note to parents/students: Some students may wish to use D&D Beyond for their character sheet. Account set up needs to happen before the session begins. The age recommendation for DNDBeyond.com is 13 years old and parents may use their email account to sign up their student for this account at their discretion. Families who do not wish to use DNDBeyond.com will be provided a selection of pregenerated characters from which to choose upon sign up and are still more than welcome to sign up for the course!
Learning Goals
Students will get to experience all that a roleplaying game has too offer: teamwork, problem solving, social interaction, and basic statistical calculations. Through the process of playing, their characters will develop and evolve, leading to discussions with the instructor and other players about applying skills in a game setting.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
Our games are team focused and inclusive. All students receive turns in the game world, and the DM seeks to include everybody in the context of the narrative. Deliberately negative actions by other players directed at other students' characters is not allowed and, if this occurs repeatedly, will result in removal from the game without a refund.
This campaign deals with vampires! We do our best to ensure that the story is age appropriate, and the core villian is a vampire. Parents should know that there are lots of undead, occult, and "dark magic" themes. Your discretion is advised and please let us know what questions we can answer.
Role-playing games offer a creative "sandbox" in which participants can engage in imaginative problem solving. Fantasy violence will not be directly depicted, but the possibilities of this within the game will be discussed. Students may wish to explore ideas related to their characters that involve in-game "weapons" and "spells" for the use of "in-game" violence. All instructor descriptions are as age appropriate as possible.
