Building on the foundational knowledge from our Intro to D&D 101 course, this workshop is perfect for students who understand the basics of races and classes and are ready to bring their characters to life.

🌟 Class Focus:
Unlock the secrets of character design and immerse yourself in the technical aspects of crafting a unique persona. This workshop encourages creativity, critical thinking, and a deeper understanding of statistical elements within the game.

⚠️ Important Note to Parents:
This workshop is not recommended as a first D&D experience due to its technical nature. It is specifically tailored for students who are eager to learn the intricacies of character creation. Parents, please be aware that the abundance of information may be overwhelming, and younger students (10 and below) may benefit from adult guidance.

Character creation is a process, and in this class we'll use the character builder from www.dndbeyond.com. This tool will help us go step by step and create a custom character that is a dynamic persona ready for your next adventure. You need to make a free account on www.dndbeyond.comn using a parent/adults Gmail or apple account to ensure you retain control of the account credentials. THIS IS REQUIRED BEFORE CLASS. This will allow you to save many different characters, and you can print out the sheets using a printer.

This lesson will involve reading information on a computer. Students will need to be able to read independently or have an adult off screen to assist with if some of the vocabulary is difficult. I’ve done this lesson before and most 11 year olds do just fine with the reading level.

D&D Beyond has a large amount of free content, however some races and classes are unavailable. I cannot assure that student "first choices" can be accessed for free. This class is designed to instruct the character creation process, which will allow students to create characters from scratch so long as they have the necessary resources.

A basic understanding of the D&D 5th Edition rules is strongly preferred, specifically of race and class in the game. You will get the most out of this class with some knowledge of the classes, races, skills, and magic which classes can use magic, and general mechanics of the game, however. Our 101 course covers these topics.

We will guide you through class and race selection, generating and assigning attributes, choosing skills, equipment and class specific abilities and spells and a simple set of personality traits to help you play your character. This class focuses on learning a process, and while all my classes are highly interactive, time will not permit intensive one-on-one interaction for detailed character questions.

We dig into the different trade offs statistically and from a role playing perspective when creating a character.

The only homework to do before class is to have know what race and class of the character you want to play AND create your D&D Beyond account. This is subject to change at your discretion, if you realize some other concept is more appealing. Let’s stick to characters that are generally good people, even though they will all have their flaws.

Note regarding third-party website:
You may choose to allow your child to have access to the D&D Beyond website (dndbeyond.com) to assist in their creation of characters or other content for use in this class. Use of and access to the D&D Beyond website is not required for future classes, and we provide this service to assist those who are interested in using D&D Beyond. It is solely within your discretion as the parent whether to allow your child to access the D&D Beyond website. Please note that the D&D Beyond website is a third-party service over which we have no control or responsibility, and any data or information shared on it or any other third-party website is subject to their terms of service and privacy policies.

Learning Goals

By the end of class students will be able to create their own characters using DnD Beyond. They will have an understanding of how the various components of the character building rules fit together to create a playable persona.

Parental Guidance
Roleplaying games offer a creative "sandbox" in which participants can engage in imaginative problem solving. Fantasy violence will not be directly depicted, but the possibilities of this within the game will be discussed. Students may wish to explore ideas related to their characters that involve in-game "weapons" and "spells" for the use of "in-game" violence.
Supply List
This class uses the DnDBeyond.com website to create characters and is required for the course. Many students use two devices to have the best experience: one for the zoom call, the other for the website. If students opt for this route, we strongly encourage students to use the computer/desktop/laptop for interaction with the website, and the other device (typically an iPad/tablet) for logging into the zoom call.

To access the site, parents must use their gmail or apple ID to create an account. The site does not accept account credentials from users under the age of 13 to comply with new federal laws related to data privacy. If I can help or answer any questions with this, please let me know. Students that do not have an account at the beginning of class will be transferred into another session at a later date.

Students will need paper and pencil to take brief notes, and to write down things they think are amazing!

Students may wish to purchase the D&D Players Handbook. This is an optional text. A link is included for reference.
