Class Experience
In this interactive class, students will learn how to run their first Dungeons & Dragons game as the Dungeon Master! Every group that plays Dungeons & Dragons needs a DM, and that DM needs to know the rules, techniques, and methods to make sure their group has a great time. The good news is that most students already have the skills to become a DM, they just need to see how it all connects. This class will help your learner do just that. By the end of the course, they will have the tools...
Students will learn the skills necessary to run their own D&D games: the rules of the system, storytelling techniques, worldbuilding, cooperation, compromise, and organizing a group of players.
The DnD Club has organized and taught groups of Dungeons and Dragons for over 5,000 students and community members, running games professionally for private clients between the ages of 8-70 years old. Our teachers and GMs train together on best practices, are almost all traditional classroom teachers, and work to ensure an excellent experience for each child, every class. It's our mission that your child feels empowered and excited after this lesson, potentially sparking an interest in a wonderful activity.
Each session students will have an assignment related to the lesson that will take between 20-30min. This assignment is usually very fun for students as it relates to creating their own adventure.
Students will create an adventure, which they will take turns running as DMs. This will put all their skills into practice in a collaborative format.
10 hours per week in class, and an estimated 2 - 4 hours per week outside of class.
Roleplaying games offer a creative "sandbox" in which participants can engage in imaginative problem solving. Fantasy violence will not be directly depicted, but the possibilities of this within the game will be discussed. Students may wish to explore ideas related to their characters that involve in-game "weapons" and "spells" for the use of "in-game" violence.
We will use the D&D 5e Players Handbook, Dungeon Master's Guide, and Monster Manual.
