Class Experience

Students do not need any prior Spanish language to take this course. Class begins with a fun song that is catchy and will lure your child into the lesson. Motions will go along with the song to help make connections to the vocabulary seen on the screen as the song plays. My hope is to make the student feel comfortable with making mistakes, as that is part of the language acquisition process and I model this in my classes to build student confidence. The Spanish vocabulary for 4 popular home pets will be introduced through a slide presentation with interactive features and students will engage in conversation with the teacher using the sentence stem-- "I have a..." and this simple conversation; "Do you have a pet?" / "Yes, I have a ...". The teacher will elicit individual responses from students to correct any pronunciation or grammatical errors during our time together. After learning the vocabulary, students will create two cards for each word: one card with the new Spanish word, and one card with a picture drawn that describes that word.
We will wrap up our time together playing a matching card game together of the learned vocabulary. The game is not an external link. It is a slide that I will screen-share where students will state the matching picture to a numbered card.

After taking this class, students may enroll in my beginner course that has 3 classes taken in one week. I plan on adding more on going classes to my schedule soon!

Students will be able to say the words of 4 common house pets: rabbit, dog, cat, and bird in Spanish and use these key words in one sentence that tells another person what pet they have and an interrogative sentence to ask a friend what pet they have. Learning will be accomplished through song, visual cards, game, and interactive dialogue with the class and teacher. Students can share their pet during class time as show & tell if they'd like and I would gladly extend lesson content using their pet if time allows.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Virginia Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
I have my Masters of Arts in Teaching Elementary Education along with my Teaching License and a Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFOL) Certificate and will be entering my 9th year in the field of education this Fall of 2024. I have taught middle school Spanish and English, as well as Kindergarten Spanish Immersion. I I also taught all subjects in a general education classroom for third and first graders. Prior to teaching, I was a Co-Director of an after-school program that served urban communities. I will specifically be offering Spanish and Elementary subjects classes. I believe your child will better develop and enhance their Spanish abilities when they learn from a native-speaker. My philosophy of teaching is to include the child in the learning process to make it an active learning environment. I accomplish this with role-play, skits, songs, music, and movement. From other parents, I have been told that as an educator I am patient, caring, and able to meet the needs of the learner where they are at. Something fun that I enjoy doing daily is spinning classes on my indoor cycle. I believe it is important to stay healthy so that I can provide the best attitude and teaching ability to my students because they deserve the best from me. I hope you can join me in one of my lessons! See you in my classroom.
