Class Experience

This class is primarily targeted at those who are currently participating in a drumline in a marching band, as this is my primary field of expertise as a percussionist. This class is also suitable for those who need some extra help practicing their parts in concert/symphonic band percussion contexts. The topics covered in this class will include but are not limited to:

-General technique for marching snare drum, bass drum, and quad drums.
-Clarification with reading sheet music rhythms (if needed).
-Polyrhythms
-Unusual time signatures.
-Rudiments: rolls, paraddidles, double strokes, triple strokes, flams, buzzes, etc.
-Practice habits
-Accents, taps, dynamics

In my 1:1 classes, I am here for the learner. Whatever they feel they need help with is what we will work on that day. This class can be used as a chance to learn new topics from me, but it may also be used as a guided practice session for their music in other classes. Our first meeting will include a lot of discussing their past experiences with drumming, and what they'd like to set for their drumming goals.

Learning Goals

Since this is a 1:1 class, a goal I have for all learners - and one they should have for themselves - is that they become a better drummer today than they were yesterday. This is achieved by refining their skills in:

-Rhythmic accuracy: understanding what the rhythm on the sheet music should sound like, and translating that to the drum.
-Quality of sound: maintaining a relaxed grip on the stick such that the sound isn't "choked-off".
-Dynamic integrity: playing passages according to the prescribed dynamics to give the music shape and emotion.

Supply List
A practice pad and drumsticks are essential. If the student is in a drumline setting, I expect them to have the appropriate sticks for that context.

I started with percussion in my grade 6 band class, and I got started with marching band in grade 10. I continued with the activity for 4 years, including a season with the Calgary Stampede Showband, a 7-time WAMSB gold medalist. I have been instructing marching band for nearly 6 years, and it's wone of my life's biggest passions.
