What's included
1 live meeting
25 mins in-class hours per weekHomework
Students will get to pick from various assignments presented in lessons, often practicing and presenting a single concept for multiple weeks as they work to perfect it.Class Experience
Every week we will approach songs from multiple levels, so everyone from absolute beginners to multi-year students will have something challenging to work on each week. We lean heavily toward real-world playing (along with actual songs), developing listening skills, and having fun! Students don't need to have any drumming experience, and as an introduction to the class, students will receive a few basic instructional videos to get them used to the vocabulary and basic concepts we will use in class. As we play each song, every student will use the opportunity to practice the skill that is currently a challenge for them. Students are encouraged to share in class, ask for one-on-one help as needed, and request help outside of class via the classroom or the class Flipgrid. Self-assessment can be a big part of the class too - if it feels boring, it's time to work on the next skill; if it feels discouraging, you're taking on too much; but if it feels a little frustrating because you can't quite get it right, you're probably on the verge of a breakthrough and you should keep grinding away right where you are. As we will discuss in class, a HUGE part of drumming is listening, so we will spend a great deal of time in class playing along with songs as we listen for new elements and attempt to incorporate the new skills and use the new tools we accumulate.
Learning Goals

Supply List
No need to purchase anything. At minimum, students should have 2 sticks from their yard and 2 buckets, pots or pans to hit. Eventually, a $2 pair of drumsticks or a 97-cent bucket could be a nice optional upgrade. If you have a drum kit, even better! It doesn't matter how fancy the drums are because it's not what you hit, it's when you hit it.

External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
California Teaching Certificate
Bachelor's Degree from CSUS Sacramento
I have been teaching music to kids and adults for over 20 years, and it's the world's best job.
A credentialed teacher, I primarily teach piano, guitars, drums, ukulele, banjo, bass, saxophone, and flute. Besides teaching music, I also spent many years as an elementary classroom teacher, and like to spend as much time as possible with my wife and six kids.
I believe that learning an instrument isn’t magic! Anyone can jump in and learn what they want. You CAN do at least some of it and you can’t mess it up. The music is here and it wants to be your friend.
Music is just a foreign language, so it can be as serious or as leisurely as you want. You can dedicate your life to the language or just learn a few words. The music is here to serve us, not the other way around. Most piano and guitar programs are insanely inaccessible, but my mission is to fix that with a specialized approach for every learning style. Jump in and explore. I’ll help show you around!
Let's explore. Let's learn. Let's rock!
