Homework
2-4 hours per week. 🎒 I want to assure you that the homework assignments may seem extensive at first glance, but they are designed to be manageable, flexible, and adaptable to each student's individual needs and abilities because this is self-paced. Their well-being and comfort are paramount in my class. Students work at their own pace. No student should ever feel stressed or overwhelmed in my class. I understand that every student is unique and may have different capabilities and requirements. Here's an overview of the homework schedule for each lesson: 1.) 📺 Watch the Teacher Pre-Recorded Video: ~Review & summarization of the last lesson ~Introduction to the next lesson and chapter(s) 2.) 🎞️ Watch the Chapter(s) Introduction video(s) 3.) 📝 Complete Two Chapter Assignments. In the FINAL lesson (week 13), there will be a pre-recorded video of the teacher and only one assignment, which will be the Final Project. Be assured that I am here to offer support, address questions, and provide guidance for up to 13 full weeks after your teen starts the class if enrolled as a self-paced student. Your teen's success and enjoyment are my primary concerns.
Assessment
🗃️ Even though I don't rely on standard assessments or tests, my approach is more akin to a "portfolio" system. I assess students taking into consideration the following criteria: 1. Active engagement with the weekly assignments. 2. Thoroughness and dedication demonstrated in their work on weekly assignments, review quizzes, and the final project. 3. Overall engagement in the class as a whole. 🤗 Let's collaborate to foster a positive and enriching learning experience for your teen. If you have any concerns or suggestions, feel free to share them with me via a private message through your Outschool Parent Account at any time throughout the course! Together, we can ensure a supportive and conducive environment for your teen's education.

In this class, I won’t just bombard your teen with a list of rules and road signs. My mission is to nurture responsible, safety-conscious motorists who truly understand the road inside and out. From the fundamental principles of safe driving to the intricate workings of vehicles and motorcycles, we cover it all. They'll learn how to handle complex situations by mastering the principles of visibility, time, and space management. My ultimate goal? To transform them into expert drivers who are confident and prepared for anything the road throws their way. 🛣️

With years of experience teaching Basic Driver Improvement and Advanced Driver Improvement at the National Safety Council, I’ve refined my approach to driving education. I understand the ins and outs of the road and am dedicated to passing this knowledge on to your teen. The self-paced course material is carefully crafted by Glencoe in collaboration with the American Automobile Association, ensuring that it’s both comprehensive and effective. 🚚

Buckle up, because your teen is on the verge of becoming a skilled and informed driver! It’s completely normal for them to be eager to hit the road, but driving is not something to rush into. There’s a wealth of critical information they need to absorb first. It’s essential they understand that while driving carries inherent risks, skilled drivers are also skilled risk managers. By mastering the art of managing visibility, time, space, and traction, they can significantly reduce these risks. Our mission is to mold them into exceptional drivers who are prepared for any challenge. 🦺

Our textbook has been developed over many years, focusing on safe driving techniques, strategies, and attitudes, all while working closely with young drivers like your teen. In this self-paced class, I don’t just teach the “what” and “how” of driving; we also delve deeply into the “why.” Understanding the reasons behind safe driving practices is key to developing a lifelong commitment to responsible driving. 🚗

The course is divided into six comprehensive units:

Unit 1: Driving, Mobility, and Laws
We begin by understanding the fundamentals of driving, mobility, and the legal regulations that every driver must know. Your teen will learn about the importance of laws in maintaining order and safety on the roads. 📜

Unit 2: Basic Vehicle Controls
This unit focuses on mastering the essential controls and maneuvers necessary for operating a vehicle safely and effectively. Students will learn everything from starting and stopping the car to executing precise turns and parking. 🕹️

Unit 3: Foundations of Effective Driving
Building a solid foundation in safe driving practices and situational awareness, this unit covers key concepts such as defensive driving, hazard perception, and the importance of a focused mindset. 💡

Unit 4: Applying Effective Driving
Here, we put learned skills into practice, navigating various driving scenarios such as city driving, highway driving, and dealing with complex intersections. Students will gain confidence and learn how to make quick, safe decisions. 🚦

Unit 5: Challenges to Vehicle Control
This unit tackles the challenges of driving in adverse weather conditions, navigating road hazards, and managing unexpected situations. Your teen will learn how to maintain control under difficult circumstances and what to do in emergencies. 🚧

Unit 6: Driving Readiness
Preparing for safe driving through vehicle maintenance, emergency preparedness, and mental readiness, this final unit ensures that your teen is fully prepared to take on the road with confidence and responsibility. 🔧

Get your teen ready for an incredible journey of self discovery and skill development as they prepare to become a responsible, safe, and confident driver! This self-paced class is more than just preparation for a driving test; it’s about cultivating lifelong habits that will keep your teen safe on the road for years to come. 🌟

👀 Explore the "Syllabus" section below for all the crucial details and our exciting weekly schedule. Your teen is about to embark on an unforgettable learning experience that will equip them with the knowledge and skills they need to navigate the road with confidence and safety. Let’s get started on this transformative journey together!

👍 High school doesn't have to be a mundane journey governed by long semesters and rigid schedules. Let's break free from that mold! Think of high school in terms of credit and achievement based on knowledge and effort, not just time spent studying. With this approach, we accelerate your teen's learning journey while adhering to homeschooling laws that recognize parents as educators.

🔄 As a professional educator, I employ a modern teaching approach rooted in research-proven methods. It's all about engaging students actively and meaningfully. Using a "flipped classroom" model, students watch my introductory videos, complete assignments independently, and then engage in deeper discussions and learning through my personalized feedback to their assignment submissions.

💁‍♂️ Parents may assist their teens in setting up Canva accounts to create slideshows, presentations, and more. These tools are user-friendly once mastered. Detailed instructions are provided in the "Supply List." Parent will also need to be vigilant in helping their teen complete all of the homework.

💥 IMPORTANT NOTES:

• Since this is a self-paced class, I aim to be respectful of students' and parents' time by not reaching out unsolicited. Instead, I focus on responding to students' assignment submissions, private messages, and parent private messages for up to 13 weeks. The exceptions are my welcome letter at the beginning of the student's start date and a final letter at the end of the 13th week. It's up to parents to help their students stay engaged with the course content and complete the assignments either by the end of the 13th week for a grade and certificate or by the end of the twelfth month when the course concludes without a grade or certificate.

• I value both students' and parents' time by focusing on providing thoughtful responses to assignment submissions and messages. I am available to support your teen through private messaging for up to thirteen weeks from the start of the course, offering feedback on assignments and projects to encourage continuous learning and growth. However, I do not send reminders or follow-ups beyond the welcome message on the first day and a final letter on the sixth day of the thirteenth week.

This self-paced option provides an interactive classroom experience with private messaging support but no live meetings. Feedback and grading are available only within the first thirteen weeks, and to receive a certificate of completion and a letter grade, all assignments must be submitted by the sixth day of the thirteenth week. After this period, no further grading or feedback is provided. Self-paced courses on Outschool offer on-demand learning rather than on-demand teaching, which is why teacher interaction and certification opportunities expire after the stated timeframe. The certificate reflects coursework completion, and without all required work submitted on time, I am unable to provide one. However, students may continue to access and learn from this course for up to twelve months, allowing for further independent study at their own pace.

• Opt for the weekly payment option to unlock one lesson per week for self-paced students. Full payment unlocks all thirteen lessons at once, ideal for flexible learning schedules and it has a discount!

Feel free to contact me through Outschool anytime with questions or concerns. I'm dedicated to providing timely assistance to ensure your learning experience is smooth and enjoyable.

I'm open to making modifications during the course to better meet your teen's needs and abilities. Reach out to me through private direct messaging on Outschool to have a constructive conversation about any comments, concerns, or suggestions you may have. Communication between the teacher and the parent is key! 2. Parental involvement in helping your teen with assignments, including using Canva for slideshow tasks, managing their time, creating and sticking to a schedule, and communicating with the educator, is essential in this class. Since this is a homeschooling environment, it’s important to remember that homeschooling laws often describe the parent as the primary teacher. Your support plays a key role in your teen’s success and learning experience. Students should communicate with the teacher through the Message Teacher tab, while parents can communicate through the Message tab on the parent dashboard. 4. Please note Outschool's Limited Refund Policy, which this course strictly follows: "Cancel within 24 hours of purchase to receive a refund. If class access begins within 24 hours, cancel before access starts to receive a refund." This means that even though you may withdraw your teen from the class, there are no refunds 24 hours after purchase, regardless of the start date you choose. If you purchase the class within 24 hours of the start date you chose, you can receive a refund before the start date. If you purchase the class the same day as the start date you chose, you will receive a refund. Note that Outschool's marketplace fee is never refundable for any reason or at any time. 4. Please note that my classes, just like all other classes from all teachers on Outschool, are not accredited by any government or accreditation agency. Outschool operates as a marketplace where teachers like myself offer online courses. My semester classes are accelerated and advanced, often equivalent to one full high school credit, depending on your state's home education laws, charter school policies, or local school district policies. It is crucial for parents to research and carefully follow their state's guidelines and double-check whether this class will count for credit or a grade if that is an important factor for your teen’s education. Neither I nor Outschool can guarantee the class will fulfill such requirements, and refunds are not available. I do provide unofficial certificates of completion and letter grades upon request, and parents are welcome to use the class description and syllabi for documentation purposes. Thank you for your understanding. 🌟 Please be aware that this class is not certified or licensed by any state's driver education laws or any government agency to grant a driver's permit or license. It is also not certified by any car insurance company. Every state operates under its specific policies and regulations in this regard. This course serves as an invaluable educational supplement rather than a certification program. Consequently, the certificate of completion from this class may not be valid for the purpose of obtaining a driver's permit or license in your state or a reduction in car insurance rates. This class covers much more than just signs, pavement markings, and rules of the road. It details many scenarios that drivers may encounter and includes defensive driving techniques, which are typically not taught in high school driver education programs. 🌟 While the certificate of completion from this class may not be valid for obtaining a driver's permit or license in your state, or a reduction in car insurance rates it can be a valuable addition to your teen's high school home education credits. 🌟 Before enrolling, it is essential to check with your state's authorities to ensure compliance with their specific requirements for your student to obtain a permit or license. If you are seeking certification classes exclusively for your child's driver's permit or license, please note that this course does not provide refunds or guarantees in that regard. ⛔️ In this course we discuss the reasons not to use alcohol, illegal drugs, drug abuse, prescription medications & OTC medications before or while driving. We also discuss all of the penalties & dangers associated with these items. ⚜️ I carefully read every student's response to the assignments and provide detailed feedback & additional teachings based on my own knowledge, insights, and education. I write my comments in my own words, drawing from years of experience and a genuine desire to help each student learn and grow. I also want to share that I have a few disabilities, including dyslexia, which affects not only how I process written information but also how I write. To ensure my feedback is as clear and supportive as possible, I use an AI tool that helps me to refine my grammar, vocabulary, word choice, and tone. Please know that the AI absolutely does not add any new information or alter my original thoughts—it simply helps present my feedback in a more polished way, a way that conveys my original intention to the student. Thank you for your understanding and trust in my process. If you have any questions or concerns please don't hesitate to reach out. ✅ If your teen completes all of the assignments for this class, including the final project, by 5 PM ET on the day before the last day of our 13 weeks together, you can request a certificate of completion with a letter grade. 😊🎉   ⛔ If your teen doesn’t complete all of the assignments and final project, they won’t be eligible for a certificate with a grade, as noted in the class listing. However, your teen will still have up to 12 months from their start date to continue their learning at their own pace—so they should keep going! I’m cheering them on 📣💪! Please note that our asynchronous interactions through private messages and assignments will conclude as of 5 PM ET on the day before the last day of our first 13 weeks together, as this is how self-paced classes work on the Outschool platform. This means I will not have access to or see any of your teen’s submissions starting at that time.
Supply List
💥 Students should prepare the following items before the start of class:

📕 1. A free PDF of the book will be available to all students in the classroom in the very first posting welcoming them to the class. If you prefer a hard copy of the textbook, you can order "Responsible Driving" by McGraw-Hill - Glencoe. ISBN: 0-07-867814-5 (Soft Cover Edition). The Study Guide is not needed for this course.

🎨 2. Canva Accounts: Teens are required to create free Canva accounts to design virtual posters (.jpg) and online slideshows (.mp4), download them to their computers, and then upload them to the classroom as attachments. Parents may need to help their students in setting up Canva accounts and guide them on different ways to create slideshows, presentations, and photo collages. Creating a Canva account is easy using this link: https://www.canva.com/.

🔔 It is crucial that students familiarize themselves with these materials before the class begins.

🧑‍🏫 My Teaching Expertise:

I have taught Drivers Ed for several years in high school in the past. I also continue to teach "Basic Driver Improvement", "Defensive Driving", "Advanced Driver Improvement", and "DUI" Classes with the National Safety Council and have worked with the American Automobile Association (AAA) to teach their classes in person throughout the Southeast USA.

🍎 My Teaching Approach:

My journey as an educator has been shaped by a passion for learning. I've earned several EDU college credits in addition to my undergraduate and graduate degrees in education. Guided by educational theories such as constructivism, humanism, realism, idealism, and brain-based learning, I’ve built a solid foundation in teaching, where I serve as a guide, coach, and mentor to my students.

I embrace a modern teaching approach that is both well-researched and supported by educational studies. This method has proven to be effective in both traditional school settings and virtual classrooms. During my advanced studies in higher education, this approach was a cornerstone of my teaching philosophy.

As educators, we understand that lectures aren't as effective as interactive, engaging discussions. I focus on being a coach and mentor, not just a teacher. My goal is to guide students in a way that fosters their critical thinking and active participation. By asking strategic questions during discussions, I help create meaningful learning moments.

The courses I offer are advanced and accelerated, requiring strong time management and self-motivation to learn. My teaching goes beyond traditional homework and quizzes. I incorporate videos, interactive discussions, and creative slideshow video projects to make learning more engaging. I also teach students "how" to learn by encouraging independent research, helping them develop skills they’ll need as lifelong learners.

When students ask questions, I guide them to research and explore answers on their own, promoting critical thinking and problem-solving. However, if they come back to me I then give them more details. During homework review, I ask follow-up questions and give rich feedback based on their answers to deepen their understanding, encouraging them to think beyond the material.

Through this approach, I help students not only learn but also develop the skills to take control of their education and become more responsible, independent learners—a skill that will serve them well throughout their lives.

I am here to support your teen every step of the way as they navigate this exciting learning journey!
