Class Experience

Each week learners will work together to build their bases from invading creatures, grow new creatures to protect their bases, and solve literacy problems in the Dreamscape world. We will discuss strategies used to solve problems as well as what creatures are strongest in defending your base. Game-based learning encourages problem-solving, critical thinking, and increases learner motivation.

What happens in Dreamscape?
Dreamscape is a free reading comprehension game designed to instill a love of reading in learners. Dreamscape learners read passages to improve their bases, grow new creatures, and unlock new items. After reading each passage, learners will answer questions, if they answer correctly they advance in the game. Passages and in-game rewards have been purposefully created to motivate learners to continue learning. Dreamscape reading practice questions were carefully created by literacy experts to align with Common Core Standards and help kids read at and beyond grade level.

Teacher Role:
I will serve as the facilitator allowing a safe place for learners to meet up in the world of Dreamscape. Each week I will assist learners in setting up their accounts, building in their Dreamscape world, and demonstrating how to play the game. I will also set weekly reading goals for each learner. I will also be there to assist learners with any help that is needed whether it be answering literacy questions or in gameplay.

Learners:
This class does require learners to join Dreamscape with a unique class code provided by the teacher. Learners will need a separate device such as a phone, (Apple or Android) iPad, or a computer. In order to make this class fun and exciting your child will need to sign up for a FREE Dreamscape account. Please make sure you do this before the class starts. It is recommended each student have both Zoom and Dreamscape open during this lesson, therefore, having a second device (such as a cell phone or tablet) for Dreamscape will give your child the best experience possible.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello and welcome to my class. My name is Teacher Wendy. I have worked in education for over ten years including substitute teaching and as an intervention specialist. I have been teaching online for over six years; I am certified in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). I have an A.A. in History at Austin Community College and a B.A. in History, with a minor in English at Texas State University. I am a homeschool mom to three kids, two are differently-abled. I have struggled with dyslexia my whole life and I know personally how hard it can be to learn simple things that others take for granted. It is my personal mission to help people like me that are differently-abled learners.

I am most passionate about teaching tween students, however, I love teaching anyone with a heart to learn. When I am teaching tweens I find it’s best to be authentically interested and curious about their ideas, feelings, and experiences. Actively and purposefully listening to what they share gives me a better idea of how to support them. I prefer teaching skills through a multisensory approach and I live for those moments when a student's "light bulb goes off". Learning doesn't have to be boring, and by incorporating a little fun and lots of silliness, learning can be fantastic! I really enjoy educating tweens and entertaining, I call it edge-uh-tain. I like to incorporate positive encouragement and praise to assist my students and help with class management. Won't you join me on this wonderful and whimsical ride? I hope to see you in my classroom!
